Star Wars: The Last Jedi comic #4 by Gary Whitta
"Star Wars: The Last Jedi #4" written by Gary Whitta, illustrated by Michael Walsh and Mike Spicer
Not much new material in this issue. But it was still enjoyable nonetheless. We see Rey confront Luke about Kylo, Finn, Rose, DJ, and BB-8 infiltrate the lead First Order ship only to get caught, Poe take over the fleet from Holdo only to have it re-taken from him by Leia, Luke's conversation with Yoda, and Rey show up at Kylo's doorstep hoping that he'll turn.
The scene where Rey and Luke fight in the rain is beautifully done in this adaptation. And the line, "Then he is our only hope" is just as powerful and haunting as in the movie. I wonder if he really will turn out to be their only hope in Episode IX or if he'll remain the "bad guy"...can't wait to find out...in another year and a half...so far away!
I love Luke's thoughts after the above exchange, "Rushing off before she is ready, to confront an adversary far more powerful, with the foolish hope of turning him from the Dark Side, despite the warnings of her Master. Now where have I heard that before?" It really shows the similarities between Empire and Last Jedi, but in a good hero's journey sort of way. I like it.
Apparently Luke's wanting to burn down the ancient Jedi Temple-Tree was not a spur of the moment decision, but one he had contemplated many times in the past. He was determined to go through with it this time. And then of course Yoda intervenes for him and makes sure the act occurs.
I never understood what DJ was saying when talking to Rose and Finn about a price. I thought it was some fancy word, but he's saying, "a pre-'do it' conversation about my price." I get it now!! Pre-"do it"!
So, there you have it. Pretty much a straightforward re-write of this part of the movie just in comic book format. I'm hoping the next issue will give us a little more...
