Doctor Aphra comic #18: Remastered, Part V by Kieron Gillen and Si Spurrier
"Doctor Aphra #18: Remastered, Part V" written by Kieron Gillen and Si Spurrier, illustrated by Emilio Laiso and Rachelle Rosenberg
I love Aphra...too bad everybody in her path hates her. I'll admit she does some pretty dastardly things but she's still darn likable. In this issue we see some of her darker moments but, as always, get glimpses of just how adorable she is as well. So much happened in this issue including several plot twists and turns such that there was never a dull moment. I was ever ready to see what was going to happen next. Even the cover made sense!
We zoom in on our "heroes" as they are attempting to infiltrate Hive Base-1 to acquire 000's lost memories. But it's surrounded by Scaraphytes (they look like jellyfish), creatures living in space that, when hit, undergo corrosive gastric decompression...danger lurks.
Turns out the person responsible for Caysin's (one of Aphra's crew) cryptosurgery was, of course, none other than Dr. Cornelius Evazan. And Tam Posla, Caysin's lover, says he followed Evazan to Jedha which is where he and Caysin met. Apparently Caysin was a prototype for the decraniated. Then Tam goes on to say "We had to evac when the Imperials used some hellish new device to destroy the city." Two Rogue One connections in one!!!
Once the crew enters Hive Base-1, they discover a frozen (literally) treasure trove of atrocities from the Tarkin Initiative. Things that in Hera's words were "too expensive to mass produce and to successful to purge." These bizarre weapons include a Wookie with a rail gun for a head, a Rathtar and interrogation droid meld (yay for another canon connection!), and Hutt clone troopers. Really crazy stuff, most of it seeming to be the result of more cryptosurgery... *shiver*. Aphra defends her fascination with the collection by saying she's a scientist and is interested in the "how" of things. I love it!
Once all hell breaks loose, Tam opens up and his entire body is made out of firepower! I don't know if he's anything but machine...
Tolvan makes an appearance and Aphra's reaction is priceless! Check out the picture to the left. d'awww.
At the end, Commander Yewl of Hive Base-1 shows up to stop Aphra and he is not what I expected...creepy to the max. And he's surrounded by death troopers (continuity from Rogue One! yay!) and weaponized Hutts.
There is so much in this issue and so much I want to recount but I don't want to give it all away. So I'll just leave y'all with the above...and the question...do our "heroes" acquire 000's lost memories? Will they find what they are looking for? And will Aphra's life be spared by her maniacal master? This series is wonderful and I can't wait to see what comes next!
