Darth Vader comic #13: Burning Seas, Part I by Charles Soule
"Darth Vader #13: Burning Seas, Part I" written by Charles Soule, illustrated by Giuseppe Camuncoli, Daniele Orlandini, and David Curiel
Well, from the looks of it we'll never know what was meant by "the rule of five"...that's frustrating. That was the shortest story arc I've ever seen at only two issues. It definitely wasn't done justice. *sigh* I would've liked to see more development of the plot to assassinate Vader before the culprits were generally revealed. Could have been nice to even find out who specifically they were. I guess we'll just have to remain curious.
Overall this was an exciting issue with a lot of meat to it. It felt like more than just an arc set up issue which was refreshing. I felt like we went ahead and dove deep into the main plot line, preparing us for an action packed arc. I'm pumped.
The opening crawl of this issue says "some time has passed" since Palpatine's rise and later in the issue it clarifies that to a year. It says a lot has happened in that time span and that Vader and the Inquisitorius have successfully taken down remaining Jedi. Now the Emperor turns to Mon Cala.
The issue opens up on a reversal of the scene at the end of Revenge of the Sith when Obi-Wan and Anakin fight on Mustafar. All the dialogue is the same but Obi-Wan ends up being the one who drowns in the lake of fire rather than Anakin...and he really dies in this re-imagining. Vader seems to be fantasizing about this role reversal as he sits in his meditation chamber. So sad.
There's a bit of a continuity issue during a conversation between Palpatine and Vader in regards to the Death Star. Vader asks if the station is yet operational and Palpatine replies that Krennic and his scientists have informed him the primary weapon is not operational...aren't they jumping the gun a bit?? The weapon won't be ready for another 18 years... Wouldn't both the Emperor and Vader realize the weapon was super far from being ready? Weird.
Palpatine has decided to act against Mon Cala as an example for the entire galaxy to understand that he rules alone and is all powerful. So we then arrive on the Star Destroyer Sovereign with Tarkin who has been given military control of the Mon Cala operation. He has planned for all aspects of a non-lethal military invasion involving propaganda to turn the Quarren and Mon Calamari against each other, stationing stormtroopers in the island cities, and more. Vader has been asked to flush out who is behind the negotiating tactics of the Mon Cala king...Palpatine suspects it is a Jedi!
King Lee Char is stationed in Dac City on Mon Cala where he negotiates trade agreements with the Imperial Ambassador. Lee Char still looks so young! Of course it's only been a few years since he humbly took over as king in an amazing episode of the Clone Wars series. Raddus makes an appearance in what seems to be an advisory capacity to the king!!! We see Ackbar, too, as the king's Chief of Security. Love the inclusion of these characters who go on to join the Rebellion--so cool to see their beginnings on their home planet.
Needless to say, the negotiations aren't going well and it isn't long before Lee Char is faced with the right arm of the Emperor...
The Zeta-class shuttle Infernum seems to be Vader's personal ship as Tarkin recognizes it right away as "an entirely different form of diplomacy." haha Turns out members of the Inquisitorius are also on board along with what appear to be a variety of death trooper.
With both Tarkin and Vader on the offensive and a Jedi lurking in the shadows, who knows what's going to happen next?! I'm so excited to find out!
