Star Wars comic #58 by Kieron Gillen

"Star Wars #58" written by Kieron Gillen, illustrated by Angel Unzueta and Guru-eFX
This was a really good issue with several different story beats that kept me engaged and enjoying the entire time. We get Luke and Thane Markona fighting the Thanrax, Luke trying to build a transmitter, Han and Leia really enjoying each other's company *smile*, and Tula Markona explaining to Luke her past and why building the transmitter is such a bad idea for her beloved colony on Hubin.
Warning though: the cover has NOTHING to do with the story!! It is so misleading and not in a "oh this battle didn't happen like that" kind of way but in a "setting us up for an entire plot line that isn't even there" kind of way...irritating. Oh well.
We start off right where we left the last issue with Luke and Thane Markona in the midst of a battle with the Thanrax--the giant beasties pictured below. Thane sees Luke's lightsaber and asks, "Just a trinket you picked up from some junkpile or can you use it?" to which Luke replies "Both"--haha! I guess ole Obi-Wan Kenobi's hovel wasn't much more than a junkpile to Luke...
Later, Tula sees Luke using his saber against a Thanrax rampaging into town and says it reminds her of her grandmother's!! I want to know so much more about these people! If Tula's grandmother was a Jedi, what could that mean?? We do learn a bit more as the story progresses, but you'll have to read to find out what. This grandmother has a little bit in common with Ahsoka actually! Although not in as drastic a sense.
C-3PO has a hover chair now! The poor guy finally has a way to get around even with his loss of a lower half. *heart*
Han and Leia have a truly intriguing conversation around the era of Solo: A Star Wars Story. Strange, Han says there was a girl but that it wasn't "like that". He most certainly thought it was like that at the time...although he's right that for Qi'ra it was not. Leia says she cannot believe he used to be a stormtrooper and his response? "Hey, I didn't say I was any good at being a trooper." Love it.
The ending panel was fantastic!! The weather outside the window interplayed perfectly with what Leia has spent her time on Hubin doing. I can't wait to see what she's been cooking up to...not gonna say.
All in all, a wonderful issue with a lot going on! I'm starting to trust the people of Hubin and understand the reason they don't want to bring in unknown outsiders is because they fear for their safety and their way of life. I can completely get that. Back in 2008, I lived with the Maasai people in Tanzania for a week and they lived in cow dung huts without any electricity or running water or cell phone service. And when they asked us study abroad students what we would change about their society, I said, "I wouldn't change anything because your way of life is beautiful and you deserve to live how you want to live." The elders of the tribe were deeply moved and thanked me profusely for my absence of desire to change the way they lived.
So I feel like the Hubins deserve a chance to live how they desire without any outside influence. It might be true that the Rebels come and all is good, but what if the Empire gets ahold of the transmission and ruin Hubin forever?? As much as the idea of staying on Hubin for months pains Luke, I think the best thing for the people who have treated him so kindly is to simply let them live. Kind of reminds me of Poe's message at the end of the Poe Dameron comic series, "It's about saving your galaxy. The one within your reach." Too bad Poe hasn't even been born yet to pass on this newfound knowledge to a very anxious and impatient Luke!!
