Star Wars: Resistance - Episode 11 - "Station Theta-Black"
Star Wars: Resistance - Episode 11 - "Station Theta-Black" written by Brandon Auman, directed by Sergio Paez
A fine episode, but not as good as the trailer hyped it up to be. Everything just still feels so small scale and unimportant in the big picture. I guess it felt different with Rebels because there was a whole team involved--Zeb, Sabine, Hera, Kanan, Ezra, and Chopper...six beings who contributed to the story's wholeness. Whenever Kaz goes off on missions that don't involve Neeku or Tam or Yeager, it's just Kaz and Poe so it doesn't feel as full and rounded out. Yes, there's BB-8 and CB-23, but two of the four characters not speaking Basic makes the conversations fairly one-sided from what we are able to discern. I'm just not sure I'm completely sold on this series yet. I like it just fine and am watching every episode as they come out as it's Star Wars content and of course I'm going to consume it, but am I eager and jumping up and down before every episode? No...not really. Sad because we're 11 episodes in and I had hoped to be feeling that way by now. Oh well, maybe the second half of this season will amp up the game.
As for the episode itself, the action takes place nearly completely off Castilon, mostly at the First Order's Station Theta-Black. Poe and Kaz go on a mission to collect intel on a possible First Order outpost and they discover an abandoned station it turns out is scheduled for demolition. They don't find out this last bit of information until they are already on the station with their ships tucked safely away on a neighboring asteroid. It isn't long before the First Order arrives to enact said demolition and our heroes are caught! Leia told Poe not to engage but, of course, he engages and Poe and Kaz must fight for their lives to escape the First Order's blasterfire as well as the exploding station.
Throughout this entire episode Kaz was acting like a complete dolt as if his New Republic Naval training prepared him for absolutely nothing. I found this quite irritating. I realize that the New Republic was known for disarmament and reduced military but goodness, he even says he practiced in weapons simulations but never used a real weapon in his life! And when his ship is being attacked by First Order TIEs, he freaks out and keeps saying, "Poe they're on me!" "Poe I need your help!" He can't seem to figure out how to fight for himself. This says something really sad about the New Republic that they were not ready for anything. Perhaps it isn't just Kaz being clumsy and oafish but instead that he wasn't properly trained in the ways we expect military personnel to be trained. Hmmm...
So all in all, I'm still not sold and am left with even more questions about the competency of the New Republic. But that isn't to say I'm not looking forward to the second half of the season! Here's hoping we get a more cohesive storyline with bigger plot points and more connections to everything as a whole.
P.S. Check out the awesome First Order attack droid in the picture up-top! It looked super innocent at first and then it became scary as all get out. Reminds me of 0-0-0 and BT <3.
