"Doctor Aphra #36: Unspeakable Rebel Superweapon, Part V" by Simon Spurrier
"Doctor Aphra #36: Unspeakable Rebel Superweapon, Part V" written by Simon Spurrier, illustrated by Wilton Santos, Cris Bolson, Walden Wong, and Chris O'Halloran
Wow! This issue was incredible!! It was mostly a monologue from Minister Voor but the twists and turns and secret ploys were simply delicious!! I am in awe. I really don't want to give away much here because this should be experienced and enjoyed line by line. I 100% recommend you give this one a try--of course you'll need to start out with the first issue of the "Unspeakable Rebel Superweapon" arc for it to make as much sense as it did for me. But it is beyond worth it!!
I did want to go ahead and provide some back story for Minister Voor. Apparently she was a "middle-ranking princess" (no clue what is meant by middle-ranking...as compared to what??) whose parents married her off to a "bloviating senator" at 18 (to bloviate is to talk at length in an inflated or empty way--new word alert!). After staging an elaborate plot to implicate her husband in treason, she killed him in such a way for it to appear to be suicide and manipulated his Will to put her in charge in his place. She then created the Coalition for Progress and "coined the three guiding tenets of Imperial outreach." 1. The Face of Chaos--if there aren't easily accessible monsters, mobsters, thieves, or pirates, then make some up and allow the populace to feel afraid. 2. Perfection in the "Emperor's embrace"--show these fearing worlds just how harmonious life under the Empire will be. 3. "We conspicuously wipe a tear for the worlds that say no" which is a quote displayed on a back drop of corpses covered under sheets...implying I'm sure that the deaths are supposedly from the monsters and not from the Imperials. She is so good at manipulation and intrigue!!
Voor then begins to unravel her plot to kill Palpatine and as justification for her plan says, "Nobody ever volunteered to embrace a savior whose only joy is watching his pet cyborg snap throats." Yikes! Hit the nail on the head.
Things begin to unravel and revelations are made known as she describes her plot and Aphra realizes she's been used...but was she really?? You should absolutely check this arc out if you have not already. The surprises just keep hitting you and the very end is the biggest one of all!!
One thing I'm unsure of though is how Aphra knows that Palpy is a Force-user?? That's certainly not displayed in any propaganda. Did Vader tell her?? I honestly can't remember, but it just seems like a bit of information that only the most trusted and privileged of people would be aware of. Because remember when Eneb Ray in the first "Star Wars" comic annual issue discovered Palpy was a Force-user?? He just about lost all sense of reality and went bonkers! I don't know if this was a misstep on the author's part or if I'm just forgetting something. Hmmm...
Again, READ THIS!! Goodness, I freaking LOVE Aphra so much!!! And her new outfit in this issue is pretty sweet as well...(check it out below).
