"Jedi Fallen Order: Dark Temple, Part I: A Planet Divided" by Matthew Rosenberg
"Jedi Fallen Order: Dark Temple, Part I: A Planet Divided" written by Matthew Rosenberg, illustrated by Paolo Villanelli and Arif Prianto
This was a highly intriguing beginning to a brand new series! Although I have NO idea how it connects to the video game of the same name--Jedi Fallen Order. Perhaps the opening scene with the Inquisitor on Ontotho gives us a clue?? I guess I'll find out when I pick up the game October 4th!!!
So as I just mentioned, we start off in a warzone on Ontotho where Imperial Stormtroopers are fighting off a "local resistance." An Inquisitor shows up, proclaiming that if Commander Atty could do his job in rooting out the insurgents that she would not have had to come. The battle looks intense as all get out (see image at the very end of this review). And then we skip to years earlier on Nameel.
Here we are introduced to Cere Junda, Padawan to Master Cordova (see the two pictured below), as they mediate a dispute between a group of Dupei Monks and a group of Trandoshans led by the Warlord Vurrsk. I never realized before how varied Trandoshans are compared to each other--check out the image below for the great variety they display. It's pretty darn cool. The mission turns out quite the opposite of what Padawan Junda had expected and she's worried about getting kicked out of the Jedi Order for her use of force against the Trandoshans. Turns out she gets another mission instead.
Interesting side note, when Junda and Cordova are in the High Council Chamber, Jocasta Nu is sitting as a member!! I somehow totally missed that she was on the Council at some point in time. Very interesting! Check her out on the left below.
So, Ontotho (very cool how we connect back to this same planet but at a time much earlier in history) has just become part of the Republic and an ancient temple has been found in the Fylar Region, believed to be of Ontothon origin. The government of that planet has made an agreement with the Daa Corporation (founded by Dylanto Daa) to begin exploration of said temple. Problem is, the Fylar Region renounces the government of the rest of the planet and Cordova and Junda are sent to broker peace talks with the Fylari people so the rest of the planet can gain knowledge from the artifacts in the temple. I'm quite fascinated by the idea of this temple and can't wait to find out more about what's inside! The title of this issue--"A Planet Divided" clearly refers to the Fylari vs. the rest of Ontotho.
Ontotho appears to be a fairly interesting planet with constant pink snow from Tambic Gas that has a very high freezing point (wait...shouldn't that be very low freezing point?? Or am I getting my science wrong here?...) and so falls down to the planet below as frozen flakes and turns into gas immediately upon hitting the ground. Apparently it is poisonous in high quantities if consumed. See the pretty pink snow and the above information spoken by Daa below.
Anway, a convoy is sent to Fylar consisting of Junda, Cordova, and some of Daa's best men...in armored transports nonetheless. And the convoy gets attacked...by who? We don't know yet, but may find out very soon! There's also an interesting note about the forest being so strong in the Force that it makes it difficult to sense anything happening within. I'm very curious about this Force nexus. AND...Junda seems very Anakin-esque as she bounds off toward danger at every turn. There's even a wonderful panel that could be easily replaced with Obi-Wan saying the same thing as Cordova in response to Anakin's actions (see this panel below). I really do love it. Reminds me of Attack of the Clones during the speeder bike chase at the very beginning of the film!
Random trivia:
-There was a collapsing star in the Bunka System that waylaid troops headed for Ontotho.
So all in all an interesting start to what is sure to be a fascinating new series. I can't wait to see what happens next and am super pumped to see how it all connects to the video game coming out in October!!
