The Clone Wars: Season 7: Episode 9 "Old Friends Not Forgotten"

The Clone Wars: Season 7: Episode 9 "Old Friends Not Forgotten" written by Dave Filoni, directed by Saul Ruiz
Wow!!! Just wow!!! This episode was simply phenomenal. It was set up as if the beginning of an actual movie and definitely played out with cinematic flair! We open up to the original original Lucasfilm logo (see to the left) and instead of a moral at the beginning like usual, we get "Part I" along with the episode's title, then the fanfare is the old familiar of the saga that we know and love. In fact, much of the music in this episode was taken straight from the saga movies and not the typical "Clone Wars" fare. It really did feel like I was having a cinematic experience while watching this beauty of an episode.
In the opening "war catch-up," we see Aayla Secura on Felucia and Plo Koon on Cato Nemoidia, beginning the fights that we know will end in their deaths by way of Order 66-ed clones. We also see a glimpse of Caleb Dume alongside Depa Billaba as they stand in hologram form around a strategy table. The canon connections are wonderous!
The action really begins on a bridge on Yerbana where Obi-Wan and his troops are under extreme duress, not able to locate the tactical droid responsible for the attack. But Anakin comes along, brash and cavalier as ever (even dodging a laser blast with a twitch of the shoulder...goodness, I love him!!!). And then, he surrenders! But just to get the tactical droid out in the open...while his 501st troops lay in wait underneath the bridge, complete with jet packs, R2 keeping watch for when the time is right. I have to say, the moment when the troopers jet packed off of the bridge's underside was a moment of pure joy and elation for me (see image below)! It was just beautiful. A choice quote from Anakin to Obi-Wan was, "Your state of helplessness really sold them on my surrender talk." So funny! And so sad that we find out this takes place mere days before the two become sworn enemies *tear*. Needless to say, the battle is now well in hand.
Then, Anakin receives a transmission from Admiral Yularen saying that someone is communicating on the Fulcrum frequency...a personal line of Anakin's used by Saw Gerrera...if the Fulcrum frequency was one of Anakin's personal lines, it makes me wonder how Ahsoka was able to use that identity in "Star Wars: Rebels"... Surely if Vader had heard of an agent referring to themselves as Fulcrum, he would have guessed it was Ahsoka (as we learn she's the one using the frequency in this episode) or Saw at the very least. Strange, strange indeed.
Ahsoka is of course contacting her old master to request help in her mission, alongside Bo Katan and Ursa Wren, to ferret out and capture Maul. Due to Mandalore's neutrality, Obi-Wan is less than enthusiastic about the prospect of lending Republic troops to aid their cause. Bo Katan is furious, as her sister, Satine, died at the hands of Maul, the same sister who Obi-Wan deeply loved and cared for. But the Jedi will not be swayed and decides he must inform the Council and get their recommendation on the matter. Ahsoka herself is not happy with this turn of events and devises a way, with the help of Anakin, for her to take matters into her own hands. This, after Anakin shows her his 501st troopers with Togruta facial marking on their helmets--so freaking sweet!!! See them pictured below and notice that the markings are identical to those used by Fulcrum in "Star Wars: Rebels." Anakin has even kept her lightsabers in safe keeping and hands them off to her just after the klaxons start firing in his ship and the announcement of the Battle of Coruscant is made.
Yes, THE Battle of Coruscant, the battle in which the Chancellor is captured by Grievous and held on the Invisible Hand that takes place in the opening scene of Revenge of the Sith!!!! This means we're right on the verge of Order 66 and all hell breaking loose for the Jedi...and on the cusp of Anakin's fall. So many emotions flooded through me as I realized what was happening and what that means for the next three episodes of this show! They will be taking place DURING Episode III and Order 66 WILL happen on screen again. Which Jedi will we see meet their demise? Which clones will ignore the call? Will we find out what happens to Rex? How will the fight between Ahsoka and Maul go down? Will we see Vader? Will Palpatine ascend to the office of Emperor? How far will the end of this series go into the timeline? I have to say, the ending of this episode made it seem like we're going to go farther along than I had ever dreamed possible! I CANNOT WAIT to see how this all plays out!
Before I sign off, I want to point out a quote from Anakin in regards to the higher purpose of Ahsoka's fate with the Jedi Order, "If Ahsoka hadn't left the Order, she wouldn't be where she needed to be." I love that he's trying to find meaning and purpose in Ahsoka's sad circumstances with the Jedi. He truly loves and cares for his old Padawan which makes what is about to happen all the more tearful. And one more quote from Anakin, "Loyalty means everything to the clones."--a reality that is about to come crashing down in the most explosive of ways...
So I'm excited, anxious, nerve-wracked, and joyous all at the same time over what is to come with this show moving forward. Simply amazing stuff here!!!
