If Yoda is your guy or your little Padawan has a liking for the wise old Jedi Master, then this book just might be for you. It's a cute retelling of Luke's training on Dagobah told in thinly veiled famous Yoda quotes. Really it's the illustrations that sell this one--they are creative, unique, fun, and imaginative. The narrative, as I said, is just a little too familiar. In a panel Chhibber participated in where she talked about this book, she said it was going to be the Force from the point of view of a child...that I did not see. The only truly child-like quote was, "Scary things there are. Mean things." in reference to the Dark Side cave. So this is certainly not a brand new take on the Force. This book does take an interesting approach in melding the story of Luke's training with the training of the reader as can be seen in the opening lines, "Hello, youngling. Heh! Yes, see you I do. Why are you here? Follow him, did you? Know who that is? Yes, a great Jedi Luke Skywalker will become. A Jedi, too, you wish to be? Help you I can. Come, come." And the story continues in this way ending with the call to action that just like Luke, the reader can become a Jedi too! So the narrative does have a unique way of bringing the reader or listener into the story of training to become a Jedi which I'm sure many young children would absolutely love.
And the illustrations are top notch!! I almost felt like I was in some sort of magical, sci-fi, Dr. Seuss world and it was wonderful! We do see some familiar scenes but there are crazily unique creatures around every corner and there's a great deal of brand new, unfamiliar scenes as well. There's even a whole double-page spread of prequel-era Jedi AND General Grievous when Yoda says, "Adventure you want? Excitement you seek? A Jedi craves not these things." I of course loved that little tidbit inclusion!
So if you or your child are looking for a Yoda quotes greatest hits partnered with beautifully inventive illustrations, then this is certainly the book for you. And/or if your child is looking for an immersive Jedi training experience, I'd recommend this book as well! Either way, even without children, I'm happy I now own this book because it's certainly fun to look at!

Also by Preeti Chhibber: "Hostage Crisis" from The Clone Wars Stories of Light and Dark - a story retelling the TV show episode of the same name in which Anakin gives Padme his saber just before she gets taken hostage by Cad Bane. It's an interesting take on Padme and Anakin's relationship that goes from strained to flirty as the story progresses. Check out my full review of it above.
