Target Vader comic #2: The Plan by Robbie Thompson

"Target Vader #2: The Plan" written by Robbie Thompson, illustrated by Stefano Landini and Neeraj Menon
This issue felt super short and contained soliloquys worth of dialogue. Neither of those are bad things by any means and I actually enjoyed this second installment quite a bit. The story moved forward by leaps and bounds even with a crazy detour that actually had a secret underpinning motivation. Man, is Valance a smart cookie! I'm certainly impressed with his intelligence and deviousness. Kind of reminds me of Holdo in that he won't reveal his plan to the rest of the crew and most of them think he's trying to kill them because of it. But in fact, he's got everything under control.
First we get some Valance back story. Apparently, Beilert Valance grew up as a miner, having been born into a mining family that were once part of a whole generation of mining slaves. But Beilert was born free after their people were liberated by...the Empire?!? Totally weird and the way the word is displayed (see below) makes the whole revelation super ominous. I wonder who the Empire defeated to free the slaves of Beilert's home world...I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they were of a non-human race. Beilert's father makes it clear that although he comes from a family of miners, his destiny lies in the stars above which of course leads to his joining the Imperial Academy at Carida as we see him in "Imperial Cadet." Some very interesting back story on a character who's essentially a villain (at least in "Imperial Cadet"...in this series he's more of the least of two evils). I'm definitely intrigued! It also adds to the mystery of why he's now so dead set on going against the Empire's ultimate enforcer. He was brought up to believe the Empire were saviors and beyond rebuke but he's obviously changed his mind after the Empire let him down big time post-crash.
Then we flash forward to the bounty hunter crew heading to Arvina in the Outer Rim. Valance is acting a bit crazy and the Ardennian says that's just him. I certainly don't doubt it. I'll be curious to see how this group of mercenaries are able to function with each other...turns out...not so well, until Valance proves that he might not be so crazy after all. They make their way to Fetya's Hollow, owned by Fetya, a female Besalisk and...well...all hell breaks loose as was bound to happen in such a story as this.
A couple of side notes. First, the female Gamorrean who's part of Valance's crew only speaks in oinks, squeals, and grunts and they are lettered brilliantly (see below)! She appears to be very loud as well. I definitely find it interesting that the pig species speaks like an Earth pig sounds...she even drools constantly. I wonder if they even have the ability to speak in Basic? Secondly, Valance's crew's ship appears to be some sort of YT model as it doesn't look all that different from the Millennium Falcon. Pretty cool stuff. I always enjoy seeing new and fascinating ship designs. I'd love to know what exact make of ship this is (see below)!
I was certainly left surprised by a number of story turns and found myself flipping to the next panel with a sense of excited anticipation. This series definitely has me hooked. Oh, and the title, what a plan it is!! Talk about daring and dangerous. I guess Valance just really has nothing to lose. I cannot wait to see where everything goes from here! According to next issue's synopsis, there's a betrayer in Valance's ranks! I have NO idea who this could be and am incredibly intrigued to discover the answer!!
