Han Solo: Imperial Cadet comic #1 by Robbie Thompson
"Han Solo: Imperial Cadet 1" written by Robbie Thompson, illustrated by Leonard Kirk and Arif Prianto
The info page for this issue is set up like none other. It immediately sets us up for an adventure that will be different from anything we've experienced before. So I'm looking forward to it...
And then...honestly, I'm not a fan of what this series is giving us so far. I had hoped to see what Han went through in Imperial flight school but instead we see him in basic training in what looks like mudtrooper gear (see below) though it's clearly not because Mimban is mentioned as a possible worst place Han could end up… Basically, I'm left confused. I thought this series would show us how Han got to that place where he saved his cohorts by flying out of formation (from the deleted scene). But all we see in this entire issue is him trudging it out in basic training, desperate to fly.
So we first get a strange show of Han and Qi'ra working together on a deal gone bad in the Phien District of Corellia that is neither in Most Wanted or the movie. Apparently it was over portions that they didn't get for Lady Proxima. It's not clear what the deal was or what went wrong and then we are quickly thrust into the moment when Han and Qi'ra are separated in Coronet Spaceport and Han hears the recruiting advertisement for the Empire.
Then we are at the Academy on Carida with Han where he is obviously delighted by the prospect of flying some TIE fighters...I kinda like that side of him...just gung ho for flying anything!
There we are introduced to training officer Triosa Broog who oversees the new Imperial cadets and sees all the cadets as mere cogs in the machine. Han is eventually told that he will earn back his name if he succeeds with basic training. And the rest of the issue is him enduring just that as he comes across Kanina Nico, Lyttan Dree, and Tamu Dree.
Trivia:
- Han's cadet number is 124-329
Overall, I'm reticent about this series. It's only got 3 issues from what I am aware of and already they've wasted the entire first issue on infantry training without showing us him in the flight academy at all. So, I don't know. Hopefully the series will improve from here and we'll get more of what I know we all crave...
