Star Wars: Resistance - Episode 9 - "The Platform Classic"

Star Wars: Resistance - Episode 9 - "The Platform Classic" written by Kevin Burke and Chris "Doc" Wyatt, directed by Steward Lee
This episode had some wonderful character development as we plumbed deeper into the personal life of Yeager. His past is not laid out to us in super specific detail but we get the gist of the story and it is truly heartbreaking. No wonder Yeager stopped talking to his brother, Marcus Speedstar, for a decade! The main gist of the story is Marcus and Yeager flying against each other in the race called The Platform Classic.
My favorite part though was the moment that caused me to laugh out loud. Well, one of the moments anyway. Neeku, Tam, and Kaz meet Oplock (pictured to the left), an Esral'sa'Nikto, and he provides them with a traditional Cracek greeting of friendship--he roars at them with a high-pitched gargle!! Oplock's sub-species of Nikto is a new one to the Star Wars Universe. Up until now we only knew of the Kajain'sa'Nikto and the Kadas'sa'Nikto, both adapted best to desert climates. The Esral'sa'Nikto sub-species on the other hand is found in the mountains! Really interesting choice to introduce another sub-species of a species we are already familiar with. I like it though...especially his bizarre way of speaking! He's a perfect accompaniment to the goofy Neeku who is a Kadas'sa'Nikto.
So we finally find out what happened to Yeager's family and it certainly isn't pretty. It has nothing to do with the First Order or the Empire and everything to do with his brother's thirst for fame and fortune. My only issue with this episode was Yeager's unrelenting need to not forgive his brother. It ended up feeling like a broken record. Poor Marcus even tells Yeager straight up that the Guavian Death Gang has taken Oplock prisoner and he has to win the race to pay them off and get Oplock back. But Yeager will not relent...at least not until the very last second when he finally has a change of heart.
It was neat the way Yeager's past was revealed as the two pilots were flying through the race. We got action and backstory simultaneously which was so cool. They could've easily just had the two standing there talking to each other revealing the backstory, but instead they made this chunk of the episode action packed! Definitely a wise and brave decision by the creators.
Finally, I liked the way the episode ended on a happy note but not a sticky sweet note. Yeager tells Marcus that they aren't good yet, but will be good some day in the future. So hope reigns although not enough to ignore the seriousness of what Yeager has gone through.
All-in-all a fine episode that gave us a deeper glimpse into a main character. I applaud this show for finally digging in and exploring our heroes in more depth. Here's to seeing where we go next! The upcoming episode is called "Secrets and Holograms" so hopefully we'll be getting deeper into Kaz's spying gig and learn more about the First Order's intentions and those of their hired pirates...
