Star Wars comic #56: The Escape, Part I by Kieron Gillen
"Star Wars #56: The Escape, Part I" written by Kieron Gillen, illustrated by Andrea Broccardo and Guru-eFX
This was a quite enjoyable issue with a welcome and surprising twist at the end!! It doesn't follow the cover AT ALL but I guess I should be used to that by now. No TIEs chasing them and no fighting occurs. It's all stealth and ingenuity in this issue.
We left off last issue with Han, Leia, and Luke isolated from the rest of the Rebel fleet without any way of reconnecting with the group. They took a detour to Nar Shadaa to enlist the help of none other than Sana Starros! Love that they've brought her back into the story. This comic takes place after the Aphra comic so Sana has already failed the Rebellion in bringing in the rogue archaeologist to decipher the encoding on that secret intel they gained. It seems Sana's gone off on her own again but because she owes Han, she helps him out.
We start on Barnahof in the Outer Rim where our heroes must hide from stormtroopers. They get intel that someone on Brentaal IV (a planet in the Core) can help them find the rest of the Alliance. Why the continual introduction of brand new planets I do not know. I wish they would bring planets from the books into the comics so that the galaxy doesn't seem ridiculously large with no end in sight. I love how they've been interconnecting the characters but would be so grateful for some interconnecting of planets as well...
It's interesting, Han briefly mentions Lando in regards to people finding out that Han isn't currently in possession of the Falcon and Luke asks, "Who?" Funny. I wonder if Luke would have remembered that mention if he had been with Han and Leia when they were headed to Cloud City in Empire Strikes Back.
Oh my goodness!!! C-3PO is still without legs and is currently strapped on to the back of R2-D2! Poor thing. And he is hating the entire experience.
On their way to Brentaal IV, our heroes have to make a pitstop on Hubin (a moon in the Dene Gois Cluster) to escape Imperials. This planet is super isolationist and our heroes are met with natives who don't seem happy about their intrusion. But then a crazy twist happens and I have no idea where this is going to go from here! Really cool turn of events.
Trivia:
-Apparently Nuxans smell like rotting meat (see pictured above).
-Rodian Splice is a drink.
Exciting set up for whatever is to come next! I've got issue #57 ready to go and am eager to see what happens.
