Darth Vader comic #24: Fortress Vader, Part VI by Charles Soule
"Darth Vader #24: Fortress Vader, Part VI" written by Charles Soule, illustrated by Giuseppe Camuncoli, Daniele Orlandini, David Curiel, and Dono Sanchez-Almara
I really had to process this one. At first everything is quite par for the course and run of the mill with Vader kicking butt...and then Lord Momin finally reveals himself to Vader and the ancient Sith Lord gets real metaphysical about the Dark Side. An interesting turn of events that got my gears spinning and left me anxious as anything for Vader's sake!!
So, we open up to Vader's new fortress being attacked by Mustafarians on lava fleas. The stormtroopers can't hold the natives off and someone calls a retreat, but then Vader appears and belays the order, telling his troopers that he'll show them how it's done! The stormtroopers then magically appear to be all for the battle with one even crying, "For Vader!" Interesting the dynamic he has with his troops...
Vader ends up in brilliant flames (see below), his suit nearly giving out under the pressure of all the heat. The images in this issue harken back so vividly to Anakin's defeat by Obi-Wan as he lays on the burnt Mustafarian soil, screaming for his life...but Vader does not scream...he simply soldiers on, revealing a true change in his persona from desperate and passionate Anakin to cold and calculating Vader. *chills*
After the battle is handily won...by a lone Vader, Momin makes his appearance and goads Vader relentlessly, saying with disbelief that Vader actually believed he was the Chosen One and still does (but I mean...he totally is the Chosen One...so there's that...). But I wonder, if he still believes he is the Chosen One, what does that mean for him now as a Sith, a Dark Side user? What does he think he was chosen to do now that he doesn't follow the doctrine of the Jedi? All fascinating questions! Momin then hits the jugular with, "If the greatest power in the galaxy is actually yours to control...why are you a stub of charred meat in a cape?" And he doesn't stop there! "Even more, if you had that power...wouldn't your wife be alive?" Omg this guy is cruisin' for a bruisin'!! I was so floored by Momin's callous words and was ready for Vader to just full on attack...but things don't go the way we would expect. Momin definitely seems to be quite a match for our favorite dark lord.
Goodness, I'm left spinning from the conversation between Momin and Vader. The whole experience was quite unexpected and left me wondering about all sorts of things in regards to Anakin's relationship with the Force. Momin's biggest concern is Vader's using the Dark Side rather than serving the Dark Side, something I'd never considered before. Definitely some great food for thought in thinking about my favorite Star Wars character (Anakin). What is the Dark Side's true will for him??? Hmmm...
Trivia:
-The Mustafarian who shared Vader's abilities with the rest of his people is Rrrn.
-The leader of the Mustafarians appears to be Father Kkkt.
So all in all, an issue that really got me to pondering all aspects of Anakin/Vader--definitely well written in that respect! And the art was simply horrifying. A superb penultimate issue to this brilliant long run series.
