Doctor Aphra #35: Unspeakable Rebel Superweapon, Part IV: Emperor's Eyes Only by Simon Spurrier
"Doctor Aphra #35: Unspeakable Rebel Superweapon, Part IV: Emperor's Eyes Only" written by Simon Spurrier, illustrated by Andrea Broccardo, Marc Deering, Scott Hanna, and Chris O'Halloran
Wow!! This one was one surprise after the other. So much goodness packed into one issue! I am loving this arc so far, heck...I've loved every arc if I'm being honest, but this one has been extremely intriguing and fascinating. Once again, we get a flashback to Aphra's youth and something that happens back then coincides with something that happens in the present. Aphra's life is apparently full of bizarre parallels. And it's actually all incredibly sad.
We ended last week with Aphra, Black Krrsantan, and Vulaada returning to the Rebels to "turn themselves in." Of course, in reality, Aphra just had a trick up her sleeve. She was planning on stealing back the Farkiller so she could turn it in to the Empire and get them off her back.
We start this issue with Tolvan trying to prevent her from doing something stupid and Aphra revealing the crazy Rebel Superweapon plans...Tolvan knew nothing of them and she is convinced to help Aphra to save the thousands of lives that the weapon might end. A great line from Tolvan before the secret is revealed follows, "You are predictable in your awfulness, Aphra." Yeah, I think I'd agree with that! Also, it is SO weird seeing Tolvan fighting so vehemently for the Rebellion as she was such a staunch Imperial! She's still bada** as ever though, even takes down Black Krrsantan!! And then there's a super sweet...ish moment between the two women as pictured below...*my heart*!! I want them to get back together so badly!
So Aphra manages to steal the Farkiller, but in the process the crew leave Gurtyl behind *rivers of tears* I actually kinda hate Aphra for how mean she is to Vulaada when she tells her that Gurtyl isn't part of the big picture. This is the first time I've felt honest disgust in response to Aphra's actions. I'm not too happy about that either because I've always seen her as a lovable, dastardly scoundrel. I guess she was bound to do something at some point that made me angry and sad. *sigh*
She sends a signal out to the Imperial Communication Relay on Usk Minor proclaiming her possession of the Farkiller and the Rebels' intention with the weapon. She uses a virus to cause the message to spread to all command channels and even the highest up--Darth Vader--sees it. It isn't long before he declares the need for her death and...well, is that the end of Aphra?!? What do you think??? After this, the issue took a WILD turn that was SO much fun!! Craziness, secrets, and diabolical schemes abound. I am so here for this!
We get to see Centax 3 also known as "The Aunt" and the 3rd moon of Coruscant--previously mentioned in "One Thousand Levels Down" and The Mighty Chewbacca in the Forest of Fear! So excited about the reuse of a planet!!! See an image below.
A truly fabulous issue with something for every fan to enjoy. I cannot wait to see where Aphra goes from here...and hopefully the end of her adventures is NOT coming soon...
