TIE Fighter comic #5 by Jody Houser
"TIE Fighter #5" written by Jody Houser, illustrated by Roge Antonio, Juan Gedeon, Arif Prianto, and Dono Sanchez-Almara
Huh, well, personally I feel like this last issue was a bit of a let down, especially for it being the ending to the mini-series. A blurb after the last panel hints at their being more to the story in the future but I don't know if they just mean the Alphabet Squadron trilogy or if they're referring to another comic series. You know, maybe they're considering doing a tie-in comic series for each entry in the novel trilogy...now that I could definitely get behind!! This issue just didn't tie anything up, started a new mission that sorta maybe got completed (it's not clear), and left us with the huge cliff hanger of the Death Star II being announced destroyed and the Emperor being announced presumably dead! I wanna know what's next so freaking badly!! Even the back up story about Jeela (one of Squadron 5) ended with a cliff hanger. Absolutely nothing got resolved...oh well, it was a fun read nevertheless.
We are reminded on the title card page that Squadron 5 has absorbed two new green and overly confident cadets in Bansu Ro and Rac Syrmo, replacing the two pilots that died in previous issues. They definitely let their green-ness show in how they deal with open combat...poor boys. I found it interesting that the other three members of Squadron 5 fly TIE interceptors but these new cadets were flying regular TIE fighters. I wonder if they were just out of ships or if it was because they were green and the command didn't want to risk fancy ships on new pilots or what. But it was quite strange.
So the basic story is that the Imperials have discovered a mobile Rebel recruiting base and Squadron 5's mission is to destroy it. They fly in and, from what I can tell, do just that...while fighting their way through hoards of X-wings as well--see a brilliantly beautiful depiction of the battle below. Also below is the last panel we get of this battle and I guess we're supposed to assume the ship was totally annihilated, but it doesn't quite look like that to me so I feel a bit in the dark. Anyway, the pilots of Squadron 5 are then back on an Imperial ship when the announcement about DS-2 and Palpatine is made. In the bottom right hand corner it says, "The end...?" This paired with the hint in the post-comic blurb have me super curious for what new ideas are in the works for this particular group of pilots.
The backup story is about Jeela. It takes place a few days before the main story and involves her and Broosh discussing their upcoming mission at a shooting range. Jeela is worried she doesn't fit in and Broosh says that they all made a choice to join and fight for the Empire so they all fit in. It's actually quite heartwarming despite knowing the Empire's atrocities. Makes me cheer for the bad guys a little...of course I am a self-proclaimed Imperial so there's that. The cliff hanger lies in the narrative not disclosing why Broosh really wants to talk to Jeela about the mission...frustrating.
Overall this series was phenomenal. Super unique and provided us with a whole new set of bad guys to fall in love with. From the very first issue I was hooked and I have my fingers crossed that there's exciting stuff just waiting in the wings for these characters!!
