Doctor Aphra #2: Fortune and Fate, Part II: Haunted by Alyssa Wong
Doctor Aphra #2: Fortune and Fate, Part II: Haunted, written by Alyssa Wong, illustrated by Marika Cresta and Rachelle Rosenberg
What a great issue! And talk about creepy as hell! *shiver* We get screaming face walls and mysteriously mutated beings all underground in an ancient haunted city. This new continuous series tracking the life and adventures of Dr. Aphra is looking to be a fantastic one with new mythology and lore always keeping the reader guessing!
We start off with a glimpse of Eustacia Okka and Aphra in college at the University of Bar'leth and they DID used to be a couple!! See them kissing below *heart*. They are SO cute together!! Even at that early time, Eustacia was drawn to the High Republic era and the Architects of Vaale and the Rings they created. Side note: the rings must be worn together--if they are separated, one will cause the wearer to live eternally but go mad while the other will grant the wearer fortune but lead to an early demise.
Then we're back on the Ark Angel III (see the ship below) and Aphra's new crew are discussing the mission when a hologram of Ronen Tagge appears...dun dun dun! He knows Eustacia is with Aphra and is out to get the Rings of Vaale for himself. Funny enough, Aphra does appear to draw the line at a point...ha! She can't stand Ronen Tagge's habit of incinerating every priceless artifact he can get his hands on. So when she ran the only job she ran for him, she got paid and then stole everything back...and then some. That certainly didn't leave a good taste in Ronen's mouth toward the archaeologist. And now he's after both women!
Aphra's crew arrives on Dianth in the Malitoris system where the Lost City of Vaale (see below) is ready to start a creepfest… There are structures made of bone, carved faces that screech, mutated beings, and a high-pitched ringing noise that only Lucky can hear. Even Aphra is spooked as evidenced by her question: "Hmm...if I were a Master Architect making a horror door, where would I put the key?" Will our "heroes" get the Rings of Vaale?? Will the Lost City take them captive?? Or will Ronen's men get to them first?? I can't wait to find out!!
And lastly, I'll leave you with a brilliant panel below that just awes me as to how in the world such an image is possible!! You can actually see the movement in the picture!
