The Mandalorian: Chapter 10--The Passenger

The Mandalorian: Chapter 10--The Passenger, written by Jon Favreau, directed by Peyton Reed

Unlike the vocal group of filler-decriers, I didn't think this episode was filler at all. I believe that it was setting us up for some truly impactful future stories. First of all, we have the introduction of Frog Lady (who honestly looks more like a salamander to me despite her jumping abilities) and we have the all-but-destruction of the Razor Crest. In other words, Din Djarin is in a crazy tight spot and will have to do some serious work to get out of such a dire situation. This episode showed that Mando is not invincible and perfect but is as human as you or me and I liked that very much! There's even a great quote from Peli Motto to Mando, "Stop your crying, you'll rust." Hahaha! The only thing I didn't like about this episode, besides some serious confusion which I detail below, is the fact that it was a whole 10 minutes shorter than "Chapter 9"!!! Why would they do that to us?!?

A nice additional treat were the Krykna-like spiders (see below)!!! It was my significant other who pointed out to me that the mouthparts were different between the two because I was too overly excited, yelling "Krykna!!! Live action krykna!!" to even recognize the differences. But there are a few. First off Krykna (homeworld of Atollon, from "Star Wars: Rebels") have pinching mouth parts while these ice spiders have circular, fang-ringed mouths. Krykna are immune to blaster fire while ice spiders are not. And finally, Krykna have 6 legs while ice spiders have 8. Regardless of it not being the same species, which would have been super bizarre anyway since we were on supposedly Maldo Kreis and definitely not Atollon, I still found it incredibly exciting to see these giant spider creatures in live action!!

So, Frog Lady (see below)...why can't she have a name?? Why can't she have a species?? I find these two issues quite frustrating, but I'll call her Frog Lady if I must. Apparently she first appeared in "Chapter 5: The Gunslinger" which also took place on Tatooine...blink and you miss it, that was!! Now she's the talk of Twitter! She has a brood of eggs kept safe in a vat of liquid (see below) until they can be fertilized by her husband. Unfortunately, The Child got a bit hungry and ate a few of her eggs which was incredibly cringe worthy to witness. Luckily, Frog Lady never actually saw this happen although she picks up on the danger her unfertilized eggs are in. According to her, these are the last eggs she will ever lay and they must be fertilized to continue her family line. She made it seem super dire which I thought was a little odd, unless her species was dying out as well. But it seemed like the focus was more on her family than her species. I'm not a person that understands the innate desire to have children and continue your line so I can't say that I understand what Frog Lady is going through at all. The extinction of an entire species would be a totally different story. A LOT of people are very upset about the choice made to have The Child eat some of the eggs and I get it, but they were unfertilized--there was no embryonic baby growing in any of the eggs. So, I guess I don't quite understand the intense uproar besides the fact that yes, it was cringe inducing. I knew he was gonna start eating them as soon as he looked at the vat and my significant other said, "No way, he's not gonna actually eat the eggs." But, yep, they went there. Context wise, Mando has agreed to take her to the estuary moon of Trask so she can meet up with her husband and so he can fertilize the eggs. Mando gets another lead on Mandalorians out of the deal. I cannot wait to find out what happens once they get to the estuary moon and I can't wait to see what it looks like!!

Planet-wise, according to Wookieepedia, the bulk of the episode took place on Maldo Kreis which was the first planet we ever encountered in the series way back in "Chapter 1." But in another spot Wookieepedia calls it an ice moon...Maldo Kreis is an ice planet. Oh well, I'm sure once that visual dictionary comes out all will be made clear...I hope!!

Upon watching the episode for the first time, I was quite confused by the conversations Mando had with Trapper Wolf and Captain Teva (see trivia below). First off, why was Mando scared about being discovered to be an Imperial...when he's not an Imperial??? Secondly, what in the hell is "a ping" and why doesn't Mando want to send one?? Thirdly, what's up with the transponder issue?? Does the Razor Crest really not have one or is Mando hiding something?? I still don't understand the answers to these questions. But the second convo makes a lot more sense after doing some digging. The prisoner that Wolf and Teva say Mando freed was Qin (see trivia below) and the New Republic officer they say Mando risked his life to save was Davan from the same episode as Qin. The three culprits that they say Mando apprehended were Burg, Mayfeld, and Xi'an also from the same episode. You REALLY had to be paying good attention to catch all these references. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE that Jon Favreau is making incredible connections and expecting a lot out of the viewer, but it was still confusing at first watch.

Lastly, I want to point out something that I found a bit odd. The Razor Crest was decimated by the ice spiders (see below), to the point that only the cockpit was safe and possible to be sealed so Frog Lady, The Child, and Mando could continue their journey to Trask. But he didn't tie down or secure anything in the rest of the ship...so why didn't everything just get sucked out into the vacuum of space as the Razor Crest started limping along as it left Maldo Kreis? That doesn't make physics-sense... Also, how come every person in Star Wars who owns a ship knows how to fix it?? The vast majority of people who own cars in real life have no clue how to fix their cars if they get damaged. I'm just now realizing how unrealistic this is haha. But I'll accept it and suspend my disbelief to continue enjoying the story.

Some trivia:

-Dave Filoni made another cameo as his X-wing pilot character Trapper Wolf!!

-Captain Carson Teva is the other X-wing pilot in the episode.

-Teva tells Din that they're going to have to escort him to Adelphi outpost.

-Prisoner X6911 is Qin, the Twi'lek from "Chapter 6."

-The estuary moon of Trask is in the Kol Iben system.

-Dr. Mandible (the ant dude, see below, species unnamed) also appeared in "Chapter 5"--another blink and you miss it.

So I'm super excited to see what comes next and am truly enjoying what they've given us so far in this season. There are plenty of connections with previous chapters and with exterior Star Wars canon which makes me crazy happy! It'll be interesting to see if Frog Lady's husband really does have a line on some Mandalorians and if Mando will ever find them/find a proper home for The Child...
