Blade Squadron: Zero Hour by David J. Williams and Mark S. Williams

"Blade Squadron: Zero Hour" by David J. Williams and Mark S. Williams, illustrated by Chris Trevas
This was an artfully done short story with two timelines. One taking place during a mission to Malastare, and the other taking place before the squadron gets their assignment and directly after the Battle of Endor. It can be found in issue number 160 of the Star Wars Insider magazine released in October 2015.
There are 4 Blade Squadron short stories total: the first one which has two parts and takes place during the Battle of Endor, this one taking place shortly after the Battle of Endor, "Kuat" which takes place between Aftermath: Life Debt and Aftermath: Empire's End, and "Jakku" which takes place of course during the Battle of Jakku. I'd previously read the first story and quite enjoyed it with the details of players from both sides of the battle. This one only focused on the Rebels but was enjoyable nonetheless.
Synopsis: Moonsong, Stramm, and the rest of the squadron fly to Malastare where the Empire is still holding out. Their mission: to destroy the central communications hub and planetary shield generator. Moonsong also desperately wants to attack the local Moff's palace. Will she follow orders or go rogue?
Both Moonsong and Stramm have just gotten promotions (Lieutenant and Wing Commander respectively) courtesy of deaths at the Battle of Endor and they take them with a sense of sadness. But this deters neither from the remaining fight ahead.
To initially get through the planetary shield, Blade Squadron focuses all their ion cannons on one spot simultaneously and fires. The shield is then fuzzy and flickering allowing them to get through. Why couldn't the Rebels on Scarif do the same thing I'm left wondering. That shield gate seemed absolutely impenetrable until two star destroyers sliced through the generator. Made for an exciting and powerful scene in the movie though...so I'll let it pass.
I liked the back and forth between the two timelines and found this made for a very fast read as I was eager to find out what was happening in both. I like the character of Moonsong and think she makes a fine MC. I'll be looking forward to seeing what her squadron does next in "Blade Squadron: Kuat"!
