Doctor Aphra comic #15: Remastered, Part II by Kieron Gillen and Si Spurrier
"Doctor Aphra #15: Remastered, Part II" written by Kieron Gillen and Si Spurrier, illustrated by Emilio Laiso, Rachelle Rosenberg, and VC's Joe Caramagna
Another bang-up issue with some intense world building involving new characters and new species. I was delighted to learn so much about so many things while also getting the usual Aphra's-in-a-bad-position-how-will-she-get-out-of-thisness of the archaeologist's continuing story.
Turns out Aphra's flirtations with Imperial Lieutenant Magna Tolvan (the white-haired woman with the metal facial cast) aren't just one-sided. This issue starts out on an "awww" note with Tolvan having a dream that Aphra has come to save her, and then they kiss! So cute. But alas, it is just a dream and Tolvan is still imprisoned by her own people for incompetence of command. Side note: Tolvan can't get the name Joystick Chevron out of her head...ahahaha!
0-0-0 has his own relaxation suite at his Son-Tuul headquarters, which of course is another word for torture room. In reference to losing one of his torture victims, 0-0-0 says, "Plenty more mynocks in the exogorth." Haha--what a great saying and fabulous cannon connection. Also, 0-0-0 gets really creepy in this issue with all his proclamations about the joys of murder.
0-0-0 sets Aphra up on a secret mission that even she is unaware of the parameters for. She must select a crew from a collection of mercenaries using an "aug scanner," a device that gives details about each person it scans. What seems to be Aphra's thoughts on what she is scanning appear in digital blue. Not only does she recount the objective details for each person but provides her own sense of humor based on how each one comes across to her. The best one is "Smells like death died and got left out in the sun" for Hallio Bas, a Skakoan who must stay hooked up to a pressurized hydrogen sulfide suit. The information given about each person is fascinating and really opens up the story to a variety of creatures and their predilections. Most of this run-down takes place in one large panel so rife with extras in the artwork it takes a minute to really absorb it. The panel is a beautiful piece of art and I wish I had the hardcopy in hand to really dissect it. You can get a glimpse of all the various characters involved by checking out this issue's cover.
We also get a look into the Imperial Internal Affairs Outpost on Dendada XVII where Tolvan is about to be executed by her own people. But then a surprise comes down the line and she gets transferred to the Imperial Inspectorate HQ on Coruscant where she uses her new found position to search out Aphra. Search terms include: human, female, brunette, electro tattoos, nice eyes...<3
I'll leave the details of Aphra's mission for you to find out yourself. They include more canon connections harkening back to the prequels, and I'm loving it! Hint: Has to do with the Separatists.
I can't wait for the next issue!! The cover shows Aphra and Tolvan clinging to each other in what looks like an escape attempt. Ahhh! Giddy girly squeals over this match up.
