Star Wars comic #39:The Ashes of Jedha, Part II by Kieron Gillen
"Star Wars #39: The Ashes of Jedha, Part II " written by Kieron Gillen, illustrated by Salvador Larroca, Guru-eFX, and VC's Clayton Cowles
This was a fantastic issue, making so many references and connections to Rogue One it had me giddy. And the references back to the previous Darth Vader comic just added to my joy.
We start right where we left off with the Rebels hooded before Benthic "Two Tubes." Han manages to talk their way out of the hoods, much to the surprise of Luke. Luke - "Wow. That actually works?" Han - "More often than you'd think, kid." Haha!
The reason for the Rebels coming to Jedha is revealed--they know the Imperials are collecting as much kyber as they can and the Rebels worry that this could mean another Death Star. They intend to stop whatever the Imperials are planning next. They want to support the Partisans with whatever supplies they might need to fight future possibilities. They are not interested anymore in joining forces as the Rebels know this is a lost cause...and the Rebels know their methods differ drastically--see below.
I think there's even a reference to Rebel Rising in this issue! Benthic - "Saw Gerrera once bombarded a party of collaborating civilians with flechettes just to send a message to the Imperials." I'm pretty sure this refers to when Saw and his people invaded that fancy ball--the mission Jyn was never supposed to see, but sadly did.
Queen Trios of Sho Torun has sent resonators to Jedha's surface to find kyber and find it they did... To make claiming this kyber easier, Imperial Commander Kanchar issues an edict that Jedha is a prohibited moon and all found there are subject to death because apparently people still live on Jedha besides the Partisans that escaped in their X-wings. Other cities still remain like Ai-jed where the Rebels are now helping the Partisans deliver air filters to the remaining civilians. And despite the old temple now being just a hole in the ground, pilgrims still come to honor just that--the howling abyss of the Force.
Ex-Rebel Commando Des asks if the Rebels know about Rogue One and Luke's response (I think it was him; it's hard to follow who is talking because everyone is so cloaked) was that the Rebel Command seems embarrassed at the mission. Des's reply is poignant: "They should be. Those who were good enough to disobey orders to do the right thing went and died. Those who didn't go are still here. Jyn Erso led the mission. I wish I could have gone with her..." *tear* So powerful and so true.
Then stormtroopers arrive and Luke goes and plays the hero and finds himself drawn to the Partisans' way of thinking. As Sho-Torun mining equipment drops to the surface, the Partisans formulate a plan. Will they destroy the equipment? Will they save Jedha? Will they find it in themselves to escape the decimated planet they call home? We'll find out in the next issue, Part III of this wonderful story arc!
