Star Wars comic #40: The Ashes of Jedha, Part III by Kieron Gillen
"Star Wars #40: The Ashes of Jedha, Part III" written by Kieron Gillen, illustrated by Salvador Larroca, Guru-eFX, and VC's Clayton Cowles
This arc has me solidly roped in and loving the various storylines playing out within it. We've got Luke gallivanting off to do Jedi things while Leia, the Rebels, and the Partisans regroup, and Queen Trios and Kanchar watch from the star destroyer, planning ever more diabolical schemes. And of course there's the bits of Rogue One reference thrown in for awesome measure. I don't want this arc to end!
The Rebels and Partisans attack and take down the orbital mining unit sent down to Jedha by Queen Trios and Kanchar. This sucker is powerful and big and creates its own sort of weather system in close proximity. The Rebels and Partisans must fight their way through a maelstrom to even get to the unit. Luke finds himself at odds with the methods of Benthic "Two Tubes" and all Benthic has to offer in the way of solace for Luke witnessing his deeds is "Do not stare." Poor Luke doesn't know what he's gotten himself into and can't help but feel dirty, it seems, because of what people on "his side" are doing, however necessary it may be.
Luke continues to find his loyalties and ideals shaken as he chooses to go off on a Jedi quest with a pilgrim named Chulco, a member of the Partisans. They travel to the new temple built by the Cult of the Central Isopter to "find their way through the confusion." Chulco used to be able to see the future but cannot anymore and he wishes for clarity. Leia begs Luke not to go, but his desire to be a Jedi and complete his training is too strong. In Leia's argument for Luke staying and carrying out his Rebellion duties, we get a flashback of the Rebel base just before the battle at Scarif as Bail is debriefing his daughter on the mission. She realizes that her life mission is to put the Rebellion above all else no matter what lies ahead.
Turns out Queen Trios was just getting started...The Leviathan, a Continent-class crawler for mining low-gravity moons, is on a collision course with Jedha. Will the Rebels and Partisans be able to stop this behemoth before it destroys the world for good? What will Luke find at the Cult of the Central Isopter's new temple? We'll find out in the next issue to be released on January 3rd of 2018!
