Star Wars Adventures TPB 2: Unexpected Detour (IDW)
Another great issue with some wonderful canon connections. These books never cease to amaze me!
Check out my reviews for Star Wars Adventures TPB 1: Heroes of the Galaxy and Star Wars Adventures Annual 2018.
"Pest Control" written by Landry Q. Walker, illustrated by Eric Jones
We venture with Finn to the world of Guhl-J03870 where he comes into contact with an adorable little beast who won't let the poor stormtrooper rest. Obviously this one takes place before Force Awakens. In his caper to capture the little guy, Finn comes across a meeting of Hux, Kylo, and a couple of other bigwigs discussing the whereabouts of Lor San Tekka. The beast turns off the lights in the meeting room and Kylo lights up the place with his saber. It is too funny and Finn is scared to death. Later Finn must pretend to be Phasma by simply bobbing her helmet up and down in the doorway while speaking to Kylo. Again, too funny. After they land on the planet, the little beast wreaks absolute havoc and Phasma tells Finn they should dissect it and see if its species can be of any use. Finn is disgusted and imagines blasting Phasma away, but of course doesn't do so. All is well in the end as hoards of the little guys come out of the woodwork. While the beast doesn't seem all that Star Warsy, its still super cute (see below) and the story itself was a fun one. Poor Finn!
"The Trouble at Tibrin" written by Landry Q. Walker, illustrated by Eric Jones and Charlie Kirchoff
Leia is on a diplomatic mission to Tibrin, on the edge of the Hadar Sector, before the Star Wars comic series takes place. Luke, Leia, and a couple of other Rebels are flying a Naboo ship with Leia dressed up as a Naboo diplomat. The ship is called the Breha, I'm assuming after her mother! Tibrin is the homeworld of the Ishi Tib and Leia plans on convincing them to join up with the Rebellion. The two other guys on the trip can't let it go that Luke single handedly destroyed the Death Star and they keep talking about such even out in the open...leading to, of course, a fire fight. The Kalikeedan is the leader of the Ishi Tib and their capital ships are Marsheem-class heavy cruisers. I won't give away all that happens here but lets just say Leia's bravery and loyalty convince the Ishi Tib of her worth as an ally!
"Tales from Wild Space - Adventures in Wookie-Sitting" written by Alan Tudyk and Shannon Eric Denton, illustrated by Arianna Florean and Monica Kubina
This one was hysterical and oh so sweet!! We get another dose of K-2SO at his finest and Alan Tudyk steps in to write part of this one so we know the voice of K-2SO is an authentic one. The moral for this story as spoken by Emil is that sometimes you just have to go with the flow and can't say something is against your programming. This lesson is shown all too well as K-2SO is put in charge of baby sitting three Wookiees by Cassian and he does not take to the job easily. But through a couple of trials with the little ones, he grows into his role and does a fantastic job. This story takes place in the Bartahn Sector on the Monastery Moon Charissia. The ending is so super sweet and K-2SO has a fabulous line for Cassian, "Someone small and soft like you probably wasn't up to the rigors of Wookiee-sitting after all." I love it!! Give me all the K-2SO and I'll be happy :-).
"Tales from Wild Space - Mattis Makes a Stand" written by Ben Acker and Ben Blacker, illustrated by Annie Wu and Lee Loughridge
I LOVED this story!!! It not only connected to the Adventures in Wild Space junior readers but the Join the Resistance junior readers as well!!! The moral of this one is that stories can inspire us to do wonderful things and we see that perfectly in the story Emil tells about Mattis Banz from Join the Resistance. This tale is written by the authors of that series so once again we are set up perfectly for an authentic voice to these characters. Apparently, Mattis's friend Jinby would tell him stories about the Rebels, stories that she hoped would make Mattis aspire to be a good person when tough decisions came his way. And they most certainly do when Fikk, the bully Trandoshan from the series, is torturing defenseless little Sol who appears to be an Ugnaught. Speaking of Join the Resistance, I just ordered the newest book in the series Attack on Starkiller Base and am super excited about it!
"Tales from Wild Space - The Best Pet" written by Delilah S. Dawson, illustrated by Arianna Florean
This story is basically a written documentary on the Porgs. Apparently they are aquatic birds and favor colder climates. A group of Porgs is called a murder and baby Porgs are called Porglets. It really is a precious run down of all the cute and mischievous things that Porgs do. The backdrop of the "documentary" is Rey and Chewie dealing with Porgs in the Millennium Falcon...quite funny.
So another wonderful mashup of Star Wars canon connections!! And some fabulous humor thrown in for good measure. I just ordered TPB 3 of this series and cannot wait to see what it holds!
