Star Wars comic #50: Hope Dies, Part I by Kieron Gillen
"Star Wars #50: Hope Dies, Part I" written by Kieron Gillen, illustrated by Salvador Larroca and Guru-eFX
This issue felt very short and was definitely more of an arc-set-up issue than an in-depth story. That's okay because, at least if previous story arcs are any indication, I know this one will deepen as well. Here's to hoping!
We open up to a seeming party scene in a viewing room looking out on the great fleet the Rebellion has managed to scavenge together. Leia and Queen Trios talk and Trios flatters the Alderaanian princess by saying she has achieved much. Leia won't take the complement and says it was the work of hundreds of people from hundreds of different worlds that have made the Rebellion a success. Little does she know Queen Trios has betrayed her in the worst of ways...I'm not looking forward to seeing how this one pans out.
Then we see Han on the Ring of Kafrene!! Yay for another nod to Rogue One!! He's speaking to a creature of the Alaphani species that actually looks like an alien from the Alien movies. And then has Jabba's bounty hunters on his tail...of course!
A great show of strength is about to happen amongst the new Rebel fleet when all goes wrong...and the Empire shows up...courtesy, we know, of Trios.
Vader isn't satisfied with just feeling fear...he wants to feel terror...and gets it. One of the officers on his ship asks, "The next target, My Lord?" and Vader responds with, "Hope." *shivers*
I absolutely cannot wait to see how the Rebels get out of this tight spot. All seems utterly lost! But we know from the movies they make it out alive somehow... And the synopsis for the next issue hints that the Millennium Falcon (which we now know is away from Mako-Ta at the moment) may have something to do with it!
Special Mini-Comic "Shu-Torun Lives" written by Kieron Gillen, illustrated by Giuseppe Camuncoli, Cam Smith, and Java Tartaglia
This was a fantastic prequel to the current story going on in the "Star Wars" comic series! We now know why and how Queen Trios came to betray the Rebellion. You'll have to read to get the full story. I won't lay it all out here. But I will say this whole short comic was brilliant...and disturbing.
We return to Vader's castle on Mustafar! Another nod to Rogue One. *smile* Admiral Ozzel and General Veers are meeting with the Dark Lord to discuss how to deal with the Rebels. Veers compares the Rebels to weeds and the Empire to a storm which gives Vader an idea.
Then we arrive in the Shu-Torun thrown room...for some dirty dealings between Trios and Vader.
So the second comic in this issue definitely spiced things up and deepened the intrigue. Now, I'm loving it.
