Hmmm...this could have been a lot better than it was. I was hoping for several more in-depth scenes (noted below) that were included in the novelization but instead we got a pretty straight up retelling of the film. Now I do have to say the uprising on Kessel was done beautifully--those panels were truly stellar! But there were some artwork oddities in other places that took me out of the story a bit.
I'm disappointed this comic didn't go into more detail like the novel did during Qi'ra and L3's conversation about restraining bolts. They could have done some really awesome deep diving there into fascinating material. Oh well. I know it wouldn't be very action-packed but there's just so much you learn about both Qi'ra and L3 in that moment!
The Teras Kasi fight with Quay Tolsite and Qi'ra could have been more detailed as well. They just show her cape swooshing and it's over with. I feel like even the movie showed more!
Interesting (and makes perfect sense), the coaxium is held in a thermal vault since it must remain heated so as not to destabilize.
So about the artwork, there is one instance where a Wookiee has a human nose--very strange--and another instance where a Twi'lek has hair and a human face (see below). I am so confused.
But then there are some really nice visual moments as well! We've got an angry Han after Beckett's interruption of him and Qi'ra making out. You can see his muscles contracting in a jaw clench as he says, "Kinda." And we've got Han in awe as he sits at the controls of the Millennium Falcon after Lando asks him to get them away from Kessel. You can feel the exhilaration and excitement he feels at finally being at the helm of the ship, switching and clicking buttons and levers. Both pictured below.
     Trivia:
-The Kessel Run includes the Si'Klaata Cluster and the Akkadese Maelstrom.
-On Kessel, Qi'ra claims to be Oksana Floren, Deputy Assistant Administrator to the Vice Admiral of the Federation of Trade Route Allocation and Monetization.
Overall, I could take it or leave it. The first issue was by far the best out of all four currently released issues. It included tons of extra material that made for a deeply enjoyable reading experience. But this one, well, I could just watch the movie instead.
