Doctor Aphra comic #30: Worst Among Equals, Part V by Simon Spurrier

"Doctor Aphra #30: Worst Among Equals, Part V" written by Simon Spurrier, illustrated by Emilio Laiso and Rachelle Rosenberg
Well, this issue was much more gruesome and philosophical than I had expected. We got some truly terrifying imagery along with some interesting deep debates between Aphra and 0-0-0. Honestly, it's not that easy to parse this one out. A LOT gets said between the two and I'm still having some trouble understanding what it all means for each of the two dastardly beings.
We left off last week with Aphra and 0-0-0 plummeting to their deaths in a downed ship. And we start this week in the Under City of Milvayne with Aphra and 0-0-0 having been captured by Captain Okma of the Coalition for Progress (Imperial propaganda). To escape, Aphra sets off a seismic charge inside 0-0-0 but inverts the polarity so that it shoots outward rather than inward on him. Apparently while she was repairing him a couple of issues back, she rigged up the charge as an insurance policy for after the proximity bombs were removed. Of course, having been caught, she must use it to free the both of them instead, therefore unfortunately showing her hand. Funny, 0-0-0 doesn't seem betrayed by this in the least, but instead sees her actions in the end as showing an intense loyalty toward him over the Empire.
In the few hours she's out cold after the charge, 0-0-0 deems it appropriate to torture and maim the Imperial officer and troops who have also been knocked out. But he does manage to score Imperial access codes from Okma...and what they show him!!!...well...check out the picture below and see if you can see what I see and what Aphra sees! It is most certainly a doozy and I really hope there turns out to be a connection between a certain character in this comic series and the Star Wars main line in the future! Let me just say here that the holo-image makes her cry with happy tears (for the first time in her life). And when I figured out what the picture was showing, I about lost it with glee!!
Because it was an action by 0-0-0 that caused her to cry these happy tears, she begins to re-evaluate their relationship and realizes that perhaps they are the only ones meant for each other long-term. That her dastardliness and selfishness has led her to be most compatible with a murder droid. She's clearly shaken by this but seems resigned to her reality. I really feel for the poor disturbed woman and can't imagine where her adventures will go from here.
This revelation leads her to finally unencrypt 0-0-0's past memories and reveal them to him. What he finds is not what either of them expected and this leads to a whole other bit of deep contemplation and philosophical musings. ...and it doesn't lead anywhere good...
Winloss and Nok even make an appearance and they don't bring any levity to the situation which was kind of a disappointment...they really just add to the heaviness with some very accusatory and slandering remarks toward Aphra with her being serious and heavy right back at them. This issue really never lets up.
Except, to offset some of the heaviness, the place markers for introducing new scenes/people are hysterical! Example: "Dr. Cornelius Evazan: Broadcasting all this filth" and "Doctor Aphra: Not comforted by authority."
Not sure how I feel about this issue, as the tone was really a downer and I'm used to more upbeat hilarity and hijinks from the Aphra series, but I guess things had to get serious at some point. Well, I mean, the issue in which Tolvan and Aphra split ways made me cry ugly tears and was super sad beyond belief so there is that, but to have an issue where it's sad and heavy because of 0-0-0 is just bizarre. The way in which this issue ended has me crazy confused and wondering how in the world Aphra can come back from this situation. But then I guess that's how every Aphra issue ends...it's just that this time around, everything seems so serious and final and simply dire. I really hope this series doesn't end any time soon, but the way it's looking, it just might...*tear*.
