Vader: Dark Visions #2 "Unacceptable" by Dennis "Hopeless" Hallum
Vader: Dark Visions #2 - "Unacceptable" written by Dennis "Hopeless" Hallum, illustrated by Brian Level and Jordan Boyd
What a wild romp!! We journey through a variety of crazy misadventures headed up by Commander Tylux of the Empire as he chases down a Rebel spy. The story was fantastically humorous but the imagery that went along with it was incredibly gruesome and sometimes stomach churning! Not at all what I was ready for. On the other hand, the layout of this issue was super creative! I love how the silhouettes in so many of the panels just drew my eye in. For example, there were several panels that came together to create a silhouette of a Star Destroyer which was really neat--an intact one at first...and then several pages later one that was falling apart to go along with the way the story itself was going. I give this issue bonus points for its creative flair! One of my favorite panels is pictured below.
Synopsis: A Rebel U-wing pilot escapes Imperial forces with schematics to a "key military factory." Commander Tylux is not happy! But one of his officers proclaims that they did destroy a key Rebel base and that their TIE pilots were perfection so it wasn't all bad. Well, somehow the transmission to the Emperor gets the story wrong and Vader is sent to apprehend the Rebel spy personally...but the Rebel spy was the U-wing pilot who got away... Tylux recalls a time when he saw Vader Force-choke 5 officers in short order (the images from this memory are quite gruesome). He realizes that his hide is next! And so the hilarity ensues.
Tylux's Star Destroyer is named Bellicose. Since all Star Destroyers have aggressive names, I was curious as to how this fit in because it certainly doesn't sound scary. But apparently "bellicose" means: "demonstrating aggression and willingness to fight." Very interesting. Learned a new word!
This was quite a fun issue and I enjoyed it very much...except for the excessive gruesome imagery. *shiver* I didn't share any of these images in this post because some of them were a bit too much for me to handle. But the story itself was a wonderful tale full of craziness and hijinks. We even get some cool canon connections with an exogorth, mynocks, and the U-wing. My one quibble with this issue is that the U-wing's engines get hit and it has fire and smoke coming from its back end as a result...but then several panels later, all the damage disappears and the U-wing is flying just fine. That I don't get, but it's a small bone to pick.
I'm super curious to see how the next issue plays out what with someone apparently having romantic feelings toward Vader of all people...very interesting...
