Star Wars comic #63: The Scourging of Shu-Torun, Part II by Kieron Gillen

I have to say that the previous issue was miles above this one. Part of the reason why issue #62 surprised me so much was that it was the first issue in its arc and those are usually set up issues without much meat. But issue #62 absolutely had it where it counted! This one felt like more of the set up issue instead. The revealing of Leia's plan was certainly intriguing and I'll be curious to see if they pull it off. I fell in love with Tunga all over again which was a joy. And seeing 3PO look like the Terminator was so creepy (see below). But overall, this issue just didn't ramp up my excitement like the one that came before it.
So to recap, we've got Han, Luke, and Leia along with Tunga the Clawdite, Benthic and his Partisans, and Meorti the mechanic who it turns out is also a slicer, all working together to complete Leia's mission against Shu-Torun!
We get a little more info on how Shu-Torun is able to exist as a civilization on such a dangerous and inhospitable world. Apparently a structure called "the spike" runs through the center of the planet and taps into the gravity fields of the core for a seemingly endless source of energy. This energy is used to power energy shields that surround an area, making it habitable. And Leia's plan is to bring it all down! I will admit that this bit of world building was quite fascinating.
The plan hinges on Tunga impersonating an ore baron (Lord Or-Tar) with 3PO as his counterpart--so perfect. Both of them express gratitude at getting to work with each other again. D'awww. I want so much more of these two together--they play off each other so well!
I don't want to give away the entire plan here as that's the main through line of this issue, the divulging of the plan as it unfolds, but I do want to show an image of Leia's facial expression from toward the end of the issue (see below)--she is so incredibly happy that things seem to be working out. The pure joy on her face is simply resplendent.
All in all, a pretty good set up issue but pales in comparison to #62. No giddy moments or air-fist-punches but I can see that happening still as the arc progresses.
