Star Wars comic #67: The Scourging of Shu-Torun, Part VI by Kieron Gillen
"Star Wars #67: The Scourging of Shu-Torun, Part VI" written by Kieron Gillen, illustrated by Angel Unzueta and Guru-eFX
What a positive and uplifting end to a thrilling and frightening arc!! And now we know for sure we are right up against The Empire Strikes Back. I'm super curious to find out how we segue into Episode V with this series. But back to this issue...
As we saw in the previous issue, Queen Trios has died at the hands of Leia (and had a change of heart in the process), the Spike is set to explode courtesy of the Partisans, and Commander Kanchar is orbitally bombarding the planet in an effort to destroy Leia and her tight-knit band of Rebels once and for all! In this one, there's hair-brained crazy scheming courtesy of Han (see below), a heart to heart between Benthic and Leia, and Tunga playing the hero. It was pretty much everything I could have wanted from Kieron Gillen's last go at Star Wars...in fact, his entire final arc of "The Scourging of Shu-Torun" was in a word incredible!
Will Han's crazy plan work? Will Leia's heart to heart cause Benthic to see things differently? Will Tunga's heroics be successful? The answers to all of these questions are pretty great and sometimes quite funny.
A couple of choice quotes:
Benthic on destroying the Spike and the prospect of dying while doing so--"We must be willing to defend the dream." Obviously reminiscent of Saw's "Save the Rebellion. Save the dream." in Rogue One. Also a connection to the band of Partisans in Battlefront II: Inferno Squad who call themselves the Dreamers!
R2 as translated by C-3PO (apparently the little astromech said this a couple of times during the whole insane mission--"Trust the Force, Master Luke. Trust the Force." 3PO asks him when he became a mystic!
Oh!!! And Han makes a reference to the Cloud Riders when talking to Benthic!! *gasp* Fantastic canon connection! Han asks why Benthic has changed so much from the days when he was fighting for what was right and how come, now for him, any means to the end are acceptable. Benthic replies that the world changes. But there might be hope for the Tognath yet!
We are introduced to a new planet--Salobea in the Outer Rim. It looks forested, misty, and dark.
Then we are introduced to several possibilities for the next Rebel base: Atanu, Jabone IV, Lonania Prime, Hoth, Mupin XII. Yep! Hoth is one of them! Looks like we're headed straight for the Empire Strikes Back but there's still some crazy adventures in store before we get there.
I'm truly sad to see Kieron Gillen go, but Greg Pak has done such an amazing job with the "Age of Rebellion" series that I have high hopes for some wonderful issues to come in the "Star Wars" mainline!!
