Star Wars Adventures: Destroyer Down by Scott Beatty

"Star Wars Adventures: Destroyer Down" written by Scott Beatty, illustrated by Derek Charm
This was a fabulous double story both showing the Star Destroyer Spectral long after its demise in the sands of Jakku with Rey and company on a mission to scavenge what they can from it and showing the Spectral at the time of its fall--a great prequel story that explained parts of the main story in a very satisfactory way.
So "Destroyer Down" was the main story taking place on Jakku with a great sandstorm having revealed what many on Jakku referred to as the ghost ship. Unkar Plutt wants all the goodies locked inside of the mysterious ship that has been buried for decades. Constable Zuvio makes an appearance as a peacekeeper during Unkar's revelation. He's pretty darn good at his job! I love getting to see him a bit more.
Rey jets off to find what she can before anyone else can get a hold of it. Unkar sends Sarco Plank (remember him from The Weapon of a Jedi: a Luke Skywalker Adventure?!? See below.) and two other goons to go up against the scavenger. There are stories that this ship is haunted and what they find there does nothing to dispel these tales of horror. Although Rey is able to figure out the truth behind it all and use it to her advantage which is super fun to see.
We discover a hologram message from a Rebel pilot, a stranded and broken Y-wing, vast stores of food rations, a security droid that fancies himself captain of the ship, and a Rebel droid named Zeet. All is explained in the follow-up prequel story which does a wonderful job of filling in the gaps. I am super pleased with these two comics as a package deal!!
"Destroyer Down" is fun, adventurous, kinda scary, and surprising. I have to admit it was quite riveting. And all the mysteries just added to my enjoyment...especially being able to solve them shortly after in "The Ghost Ship."
An interesting tidbit at the very beginning of the story was the narrator saying that during the Battle of Jakku, "So many ships emerged from hyperspace that […] the searing engine wash blew away every stick of Jakku's plant life." I don't know whether to believe this or consider it mere legend, but either way it's an intriguing idea.
     A little bit of trivia--Teedos speak...Teedospeak! Whodathunkit?

This one was so good!! We first see Admiral Ektol Traz commanding the Spectral in orbit over Fondor. A Rebel (New Resistance) fighter wing out of Rattatak (where Asajj Ventress worked with Ky Narec!!!) called Shepherd Squadron attacks (Y-wing/Noblesse Eiram, A-wing/Olee Beasco, Y-wing/Hopeata, Y-wing/Lt. Bak Rychuk, and X-wing/Captain Yancee Drai) and the Star Destroyer leaps into hyperspace...not without gaining a tag-along in the Y-wing captained by Rychuk (Shepherd Two) with Zeet as his accompanying astromech droid. I'm assuming here that the Y-wing's hyperspace capabilities are slower than that of the Star Destroyer since pieces of the Y-wing start flinging off and inflicting damage on the larger ship. Eventually, the Lt. records his message and his Y-wing gets captured in the tractor beam of the Star Destroyer.
There's a super funny interaction between him and a whole bunch of troopers once he's inside of the ship as he says a whole Rebel squadron will be emerging from hyperspace any minute and he has a thermal detonator. Some choice quotes from the stormtroopers: "He sounds honest. It could be his accent." and "I think he's bluffing. I'll buy the rescue plan, but the added bomb threat just strains belief." And the whole interaction continues for a couple of pages--it's truly well done.
Then some really unfortunate events take place (if you're an Imperial) and everyone who can attempts to abandon ship...even the Admiral who the security droid accuses of desertion after he makes the droid captain of the ship.
A really cool connection was the mention of Rae Sloane as having requested all ships rally at Jakku!!! I LOVE this through-line! She is a character in so much material now and it is joyous.
Apparently there is a "Ballad of Order 66" bedtime story told in Imperial families!! Woah...that is freaking morbid!!

So all together, TONS of canon connections that are just beautiful!! And a super enjoyable story to boot. I really liked this one and cannot wait to see what's next from the fantastic "Star Wars Adventures" line!
