I can't figure out whether I LOVE the way this series is going at this point or whether I think it's over the top... Some aspects are absolutely fantastic!! But others, well, I won't be going into detail about those particular things in this review since I don't want to spoil the last handful of panels, but let me just say, I can't believe they went there!!
Firstly, I'd like to mention that just as I thought, the robed figure holding Luke's lost lightsaber at the end of the last issue was a vision he was having and not reality. This vision is part of the reason he agrees to go back to Cloud City. So we've got Lando, R2, Luke, and Leia all returning to this dangerous and Imperial-occupied location. How could anything go wrong?...
We learn more about Commander Zahra's Star Destroyer, Tarkin's Will: "This vessel is a memorial to the great tragedy of the Death Star. And an instrument of vengeance for everyone who died with it." She says this in response to Lieutenant Gorr who has taken it upon himself to write up a duty roster for fixing the hull...the part of the ship that was severely damaged in the Death Star explosion when part of the battle station wreckage crashed into it--check out the damage below. He was never briefed on the ship's history before joining the crew--poor guy... To add to the memorial-ness of the ship, every crew member lost someone close to them when the Death Star was destroyed including Commander Zahra!! They were all hand-picked for that exact reason and everyone on board knows this. What an intense environment to be a part of as this is a group that is definitely out for revenge against the Rebels. See her crew members' reaction to her asking whether they will ever forget the great tragedy below!
As mentioned previously, Luke, R2, Lando, and Leia fly back to Cloud City to enact three separate missions. Leia mentions she tagged along so she could keep an eye on Lando, making sure he didn't misbehave. Lando's response? "I am a lovely, lovely man." Haha!! Lando also does a fabulous job smooth-talking one of the security personnel in one of the patrolling twin cloud cars, even remembering the woman's son's name!! He really does have the gift of charm.
So the three missions are as follows: Luke is attempting to recover his lost saber, Lando is hoping to rescue his friend Lobot, and Leia is trying to figure out how to defrost carbonite (to save Han of course). All three run into incredibly dire straits, with Leia's being the absolute worst!! Hers is the one I'm not going to go into detail about here. But with Luke, he runs into a room absolutely chock full of mechanical parts and junk...a real needle in a haystack scenario. And with Lando, Lobot turns out to be in some really bad shape--check out Lando's reaction to Lobot's predicament below! I'm gonna leave what he's going through up to your imagination for now.
Basically, we have three of our heroes stuck between a rock and a hard place. How will they ever escape the clutches of the Empire this time?!? I have to say I'm actually quite strongly invested in where this series is going. Despite the potential over-the-topness, I think it's fascinating getting even more deep insight into these three main characters. Here's to the next issue!!
