A New Hope Graphic Novel Adaptation by Alessandro Ferrari

A New Hope Graphic Novel Adaptation written by Alessandro Ferrari, illustrated by Igor Chimisso, Matteo Piana, Alessandro Pastrovicchio, and Davide Turotti
An enjoyable adaptation with absolutely adorable artwork! Unfortunately there were quite a few missing scenes/lines which did detract from my enjoyment of individual moments but overall I had a blast reading this. If you know someone who you would like to try to get into the franchise, this is definitely a great place to start. The artwork pulls you in and the storyline is...well...its the Star Wars we all know and love.
This adaptation also does a good job of leaving out the more gruesome parts: 1) charred Owen and Beru, 2) Obi-Wan slicing off Ponda Baba's arm. The story flows just fine...mostly...without illustrating these difficult to watch moments. And this of course makes it all the more accessible to kids.
My favorite characters illustration-wise were Han and Greedo (both pictured below). Han just looked super cool and suave and Greedo looked precious!
R2's words are represented as differently colored dots. Strangely, there seems to be no rhyme or reason to the colors. But it still looks cute.
I'm curious about Tarkin's line: "Lord Vader will provide us with the location of the Rebel fortress by the time this station is operational." Perhaps the Death Star needed to recharge before it could attack again?? Because it was certainly operational by this time. I've probably wondered about this line before but it just really stuck out to me this go round for some reason.
Greedo's words are translated but placed into a squished rectangle to indicate this to those in the know. I for one would've loved to see the Hutteese but I guess there really wasn't enough room for both the Hutteese and the translation.

     Missing parts:
-When R5-D4 purposefully malfunctions to get Owen Lars to purchase R2-D2. I hate that it skips out on this heroic droid's story.
-Luke finding out from C-3PO that he and R2 were part of the Rebellion. I think this part deepens the story so much and adds intrigue. The scene of him cleaning the droids falls flat without it.
-The droids being kicked out of Chalmun's Cantina. This is such a big part of Wuher the bartender's backstory but I guess that's a bit of a deep cut.
-Obi-Wan slicing off Ponda Baba's arm with his lightsaber in Chalmun's Cantina. This scene shows to what lengths Obi-Wan will go to protect Luke and I think it's so telling. A shame it was left out...but it is a bit gruesome.
-No dianoga!!! I love Omi and her story in From A Certain Point of View so was saddened she was excluded from this adaptation. She's such a great part of the story!
-Luke talking about how the Death Star trench run will be like shooting womp rats back home. I think this line is so telling of his youth and bravado in the face of long odds. It shows his character very well at this point in the story.
     Trivia:
-Leia is being held in detention block AA-23 and cell 2187.
-Han and Luke say Chewie is being transferred from cell block 1138.
Despite all the missing parts that I feel do truly add a lot to the tale, this was still a fun and quick read. The artwork thoroughly held my attention and it was well worth the purchase to simply relive the movie in a quick and super accessible format.
