"Allegiance, Part I: An Old Hope" by Ethan Sacks

"Allegiance, Part I: An Old Hope" written by Ethan Sacks, illustrated by Luke Ross and Lee Loughridge
Well, I wrote a super detailed review and then my computer ate it. Here goes another try...
What a great start for a comic lead up to TROS!! It had connections all over the place and fabulous new species both sentient and non. There's full-on, intensely angry Supreme Leader Kylo, Kendoh and the gang (from the "Galaxy's Edge" comic series) are back, and a surprise ending leaves the whole point of this series in the lurch...how will Leia and her crew get from point A to point B?? How will she obtain the "allegiance" she seeks?!?
After Crait, it turns out that the Resistance made a pitstop on the ice planet of Tah'Nuhna for supplies. This is a planet that has been known for generations as a neutral and peaceful place made up mostly of scholars and philosophers (reminds me of Naboo actually). And the Tah'Nuhna people appear to be sentient invertebrates with many many tiny arms, elongated bodies, and two larger more muscular legs. They are so incredibly cute--see them below!!! (Of course I absolutely love me a good creepy crawly). Well, the First Order does not take kindly to this show of what they see as non-neutrality (helping out the Resistance) and simply annihilates the entire planet. I'm quite saddened by this as I wanted to know so much more about this planet and its people!! Maybe one day we'll get a story about them...
After their pitstop on Tah'Nuhna, the Resistance set up shop on the garbage planet of Anoat (between the Bespin and Hoth systems). This ended up being a perfect hideout location (besides the foul air) as the pollution befuddles the First Order's long range sensors, leaving the Resistance undetected! Rey's been spending her days, when not scavenging the refuse piles for parts, fighting the local beasties for kicks, including the big nasty you see below, called an Anoatian Pit Beast! Leia knows the poor girl is bored.
After seeing the destruction on Tah'Nuhna, Leia decides she needs to take matters into her own hands and forms a crew consisting of 3PO, R2, Chewie, Rose, and Rey with the mission of flying the Millennium Falcon to find help...
Now this leads me to my two qualms with this issue. First, General Jonato says to Leia, "Just a little more patience, General Organa. We are attempting just that. Vi Moradi is searching for a more permanent base. Snap Wexley is leading a scout team to the most remote shipyards. Finn and Poe are on a risky mission to track down weapons." We know from the novel Black Spire that Leia was the one who set Vi out on her mission to Batuu. And as for the other two missions, I'm pretty sure Leia was already well aware of them. I find it very odd that General Jonato would speak in such a way as to imply Leia is not fully aware of the circumstances around her. Perhaps this was just necessary exposition?? And secondly, does this series take place before Chewie takes the Falcon to Hondo on Batuu?? If so, what is the whole timeline like?! I really want to be able to put all the pieces of the puzzle together in one coherent manner. Hopefully we'll get confirmation of the order of things eventually.
Then we arrive at our side story with BB-8, Finn, and Poe on the Wayward Comet Refueling Station where they learn of a secret decommissioned New Republic impound on the Moon of Avedot…wait...the Moon of Avedot?!? Remember that from the "Galaxy's Edge" comic series?? The Moon where everything went wrong for Kendoh and her gang? Well, we then get a firsthand glimpse of said gang and it turns out we're going to find out the story behind that debacle! I am so stoked for this!
And finally, I'd like to leave off with a choice Kylo Ren quote, "We can and will chase every rumor, every scrap, every vapor trail across the galaxy! We will mobilize every bounty hunter and informant and turn over every rock to find ALL of them...and wipe every one of them out of existence!" Turns out his anger and vitriol hasn't been quelled at all since he set all those walkers on Luke. He's still out for blood and will uncover every clue until he finds what he's looking for...
Another cool thing about this issue was its format which was that of a movie. It started just like any Star Wars movie with "A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away..." in blue letters and then the words "Star Wars" and then a title crawl!! Then the comic proceeded forward and was bookended by an end credits page--it truly was set up just like a movie which was a super cool choice. AND we got several behind the scenes peeks into how the comic was made!! So super cool. I've always wondered about the process behind comic creation and this provides us with some pretty unique answers.
So a wonderful start to what appears to be an exciting series. I'm absolutely loving the connectivity and can't wait to see what Ethan Sacks has in store for us next!!
