Allegiance, Part IV: "A Rising Tide" by Ethan Sacks
Allegiance, Part IV: "A Rising Tide" written by Ethan Sacks, illustrated by Luke Ross and Lee Loughridge
Well, I guess I was wrong about there being a whole passel of loose ends to tie up in this final issue of the series. Because it was all handled in what felt like one fell swoop. And things turned out exactly as you would expect them to. No surprises, no twists, just a very straight forward story that I feel like has been told time and time again. Don't get me wrong, I'm certainly thankful that we get more time with the Mon Calamari and Quarren as I love these guys!! But the overall story just seemed to lack intrigue and development (not including the odd ancient battle to the death from last issue).
I'll give it this, at the very end of the issue, it said "Continued in The Rise of Skywalker" which seems to point to Mon Cala making an appearance in the movie??? And I don't think they're just talking about the ships the Resistance acquires because of what is happening/being said in the very last panel. Fingers crossed!
The title itself was taken from a speech Leia gives to the King. She says, "We cannot hide in the depths waiting for the danger to pass. We must be a rising tide." Which is certainly lovely if not a bit on the nose. (See some really great flashback imagery from Leia's past during this speech below.) It is all too easy to imagine what happened after this so I'll spare you the details. Except to say, I guess there was one sort of surprise, but the whole situation felt forced and melodramatic rather than revelatory. Oh yeah, and the First Order finally did come with a whole armada of Star Destroyers and that was a sight to see!! (see panel below) So it wasn't all bland...especially in issues 1 and 2...but 3 and 4 were still unfortunately lacking something special.
As for Finn and Poe, the whole weapons cache (and the hangar its in) on the moon of Avedot is about to go up in flames what between the shooting from Kendoh's ship and...BB-8 knocking over a whole crate of thermal detonators. Kendoh is not pleased...then their pilot dies. Things seem to be looking really bad for Kendoh's crew but she decides they can move on to the sword blade heist we are all familiar with since that was their plan anyway before taking on the Resistance bounty. No wonder the First Order is out to get them in the "Galaxy's Edge" comic series! I do like that we got to see what went so wrong in this "heist" but I still don't feel like the two separate story lines have anything to do with each other and I feel like they also don't have any business sharing the same series. It was just a really strange choice.
So that's that. Not too much to say on this one. It all wrapped up with a seemingly shiny bow and we'll have to wait for December to see if that's really the case... I'll leave you with an adorable panel of Chewie!!
