"Doctor Aphra #37: A Rogue's End, Part I: Beneath the Dark Lord's Gaze" written by Simon Spurrier, illustrated by Caspar Wijngaard and Lee Loughridge
There's honestly not that much to say about this issue. It was all very straight forward and very Aphra-esque with one huge surprise twist at the end. Other than that, I was nodding my head along going yep, that's Aphra...and yep, that's the Empire. It was interesting to see General Veers in a different position from manning Hoth's AT-ATs. Apparently he led a group of archaeologists hunting for the Rebel Base!! Very intriguing...
So, Aphra gets conscripted to work for the Empire...after saving their tushes from Minister Voor...and very quickly takes it upon herself to become leader of the mission. She crosses paths with Vader a couple of times and vastly overestimates his care for her presence both times. He seems to have things well in hand and certainly doesn't let the presence of his past protégé get in his way. Regardless, the title, "Beneath the Dark Lord's Gaze" is certainly apropos!
The bulk of the story takes place in the Kartovian Formation on Ash Moon 1 where an old temple to the Central Isopter was built...remember those guys from Rogue One?! (and from fairly recent issues of the "Star Wars" mainline comic series) Well, turns out a stark-raving mad worshiper is still there and he turns out to be...yeah, you know me...I'm not going to tell you here. Suffice it to say, it is a super surprising twist. And I am beyond curious to see where they take it from here!!
One gripe I had was Vulaada's size when compared to Aphra in one image. In previous renditions of the two "heroes," Vulaada is MUCH smaller than Aphra. In this image (see below) they appear to be relatively equal in stature. Which threw me off because not that much time has presumably passed and Vulaada is considered to be a young girl...hmmm...
All-in-all a pretty good issue leading us up to something potentially masterful! Can't wait for what comes next!!!
