The Mandalorian: Season 1: Chapter 5: "The Gunslinger"
The Mandalorian: Chapter 5: "The Gunslinger" written and directed by Dave Filoni
Hmmm...not so sure how I feel about this episode. I enjoyed it for sure! But it wasn't freaking fantastic or anything. I did enjoy Amy Sedaris' character (see my rant below) and how she took such a shine to The Child, helping the Mandalorian protect him when things went south. And the new first time bounty hunter was an intriguing addition to the story, especially after the assassin he's sent to apprehend talks him in a different direction...
We start off with a fire fight between the Mandalorian and another bounty hunter after The Child. The Razorcrest is badly damaged in the battle...and then!!! The Mando arrives on Tatooine!! We know this for sure this time because Mos Eisley control calls to him when landing!! Once he arrives at Bay 35, three pit droids come to seemingly clean up/fix his ship (see above)!...but he shoots them into standby mode before they ever get a chance. Then he strolls into a cantina where he runs across a baby bounter hunter wishing and hoping to get into the guild. The Mando decides he'll help out the fledgling hunter and all seems to be going well with their partnership until the truth gets out about our protagonist.
We see the famous stormtrooper helmets on stakes from the promo material, but they're never explained. We do find out the bounty hunter guild is not welcome/doesn't work out of Tatooine anymore, but I'm not sure how this relates to a hatred for Imperials. We also learn that 500 Imperial credits is a pittance. So it's obvious that order at least is not welcome in these parts 5 years after Return of the Jedi. But I want to know so much more!! I want to know the story behind the helmets--what do they mean??? Who put them there??? Sadly, I don't know if we'll get those answers or not.
The infant bounty hunter destroys the tracking fob and says, "Don't worry, I've got it all memorized." Which leads me to wonder what in the world the point of the tracking fob is if a person can memorize the information?? I figured it was a biosignature tracker, but maybe not??
The actress who plays the woman in charge of Bay 35 where the Mando sets his ship down, is none other than Mimi Kanassis from "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt"!!! Her voice was so familiar and then it finally clicked when I really looked at her face. Too freaking funny lol.
Lastly, perhaps I missed this before, but it turns out the first couple of episodes took place at least partly on the planet of Nevarro and that the Mando's deeds on that planet (shooting up a bunch of other hunters and taking the bounty...a.k.a. going rogue) has become legend.
So a fun episode but not necessarily an impactful one...unless the very ending foretells some connection in the future...sorry, I'm not gonna tell...
