The Mandalorian: Season 1: Chapter 6: "The Prisoner"
The Mandalorian: Season 1: Chapter 6: "The Prisoner" written by Rick Famuyiwa and Christopher Yost, directed by Rick Famuyiwa
This was probably my least favorite of all the episodes because it was meant to be intense and hardcore (per the music) but I didn't really know these new characters at all so I had no real connection to them and therefore didn't really care what happened to them on their mission. It was enjoyable and had some bright spots but the other episodes so far have been better in my opinion. My favorite moment was seeing Dave Filoni's cameo as an X-wing pilot!!! WHAT?!? So freaking good--I did a double-take, rewound, and exclaimed aloud when I realized who it was in the flight suit!! See the image to the left!
Mando joins a group of mercenaries run by someone from his past (Ranzar Malk) for a special mission to recover one of the man's men. The group that takes on the mission includes a droid (Zero), a Devaronian (whose makeup and prosthetics are absolutely flawless!!--see below, Burg), a Twi'lek who consistently hisses like a vampire (which I find a little odd, Xi'an), and Malk's second in command (Mayfeld). "The Prisoner" is being held in a New Republic prison ship, something that makes the Mando very uneasy. But it's manned by droids (see their interesting design below--they actually look an awful lot like Captain Doza's droid from "Resistance"...) and Malk makes the point that the Mando hates droids so it lessens the blow of what this job actually entails. Will the job go off without a hitch? Will unforeseen circumstances put the Mando in danger? Will The Child's presence be revealed to the ruthless mercenaries? You'll have to watch to find out!
When Zero goes to check out the systems on the Razorcrest, he comes across a holo-message from Greef Karga (the man who originally gave Mando the bounty on The Child and who Mando shot before leaving the planet the series started on). Karga says something about a "rendezvous" which leaves me curious as to whether shooting him was a set up and Karga is actually in kahoots with Mando in regards to the baby... But then we learn after Zero is able to get more of the message that it's actually talking about getting the baby in to the man who put the bounty out. So maybe it's not a crazy reveal after all...whan whan.
There's a joke about Mando being a Gungan under his helmet with Mayfeld even speaking like one of the species. I like the connection but hate that it denigrates an entire species.
Mayfeld has a backpack/gun device similar to the monster hunter Winloss's from the Dr. Aphra comic series (see below)!! I love that they carried over a piece of technology from a comic to a live action TV show!!
And lastly, it's pretty awesome that we get to see a New Republic soldier in the flesh!! They don't look much different than a Rebel soldier and I kinda like the call-back to the OT. It works for sure. See his image below.
So while not all that great an episode story-wise, it was actually brilliant visually!! So much exciting eye candy and Easter eggs to take in that I couldn't get enough. Well, we're 6 episodes in now meaning we only have 2 left!!!!! I deeply hope that we find out more about The Child and that we're not left hanging at the end of the season. Guess we'll see...
