Doctor Aphra comic #28: Worst Among Equals, Part III by Simon Spurrier

"Doctor Aphra #28: Worst Among Equals, Part III" written by Simon Spurrier, illustrated by Emilio Laiso and Rachelle Rosenberg
Oh my goodness!! What an ending!! The synopsis for next issue sounds extremely hopeful (in an Aphra-y everything's going wrong kinda way) but the way things are left at the finish of this issue, I can't imagine how they even end up in a place where the Aphra-y everything's going wrong fumbling craziness can even begin to happen. There were several surprises in this issue both good and bad for Aphra, and sometimes both. I was definitely kept enrapt the whole time and was flipping pages with abandon. This was certainly a good one! Things just get worse and worse for our favorite rogue archaeologist and her murder droid.
We left off last week with Tam Posla appearing, having been raised from the dead by the Force-sensitive hookspores. BT-1 is with him, having also been resurrected!!! And Aphra and 0-0-0 are racing against the clock (8.5 hours remaining) to remove their proximity bombs as 0-0-0 inadvertently activated their failsafe. All the action has been taking place on the creepily lawful Imperial world of Milvayne...make that dystopian world of Milvayne…
We start off this week with BT attacking the pair and 0-0-0 thinking there's no way BT could turn on him, mentioning their shared "moonlit atrocities." I love it! But, it turns out BT has new loyalties as a resurrected droid and Aphra and 0-0-0 run only to have Tam Posla/the hookspores use the Force to pull them back in! Amazing what that fungus is capable of! I really want to know more about it.
But then who arrives to "save" the day?!? ...I won't tell you here, but you can probably figure it out if you read the last issue. This entrance was so good and got me excited all over again!!
Without giving too much more of the story away, Evazan amps up the signal and the adventures of Aphra and 0-0-0 begin to be broadcast across Milvayne as he narrates by saying that they are wanted criminals and their capture or death would mean an award. His main reason for doing this is his aversion to the idea of 0-0-0 coming after them eventually. Evazan finally realizes how dangerous the murder droid really is! Crazy to think someone as dangerous, creepy, and terrifying as Evazan could be afraid of anything!!
The underworld of Milvayne, besides being a dystopian horror show that the outcasts and unwanted are unceremoniously dumped into, also contains bloatbarges that siphon up expensive gases for the topworld and release smog from the topworld. This whole Milvayne situation just looks worse and worse!
There is a sweet moment between Aphra and another person (you'll have to read to find out who) and 0-0-0's response is, "I lack the organic components required to explosively vomit. I believe I shall find some vermin to turn inside out instead." Haha!! What a way to turn "I threw up a little in my mouth" on its head!
Aphra calls herself, "a guilt-riddled sentimentalist" during the quiet times, but she says during the action-filled times, that all she's thinking is "Get rich. Save own skin. Damn everyone else." And she says this last bit while looking at a hologram of Magna Tolvan *tears plural*. I really hope Tolvan shows up again in some capacity in this series! I love her character so freaking much. These last words of Aphra get turned right back on her right when she thinks things couldn't get worse...
Wow! I sincerely enjoyed this issue. With all the turn abouts and surprises, I couldn't help but keep exclaiming aloud. Some truly crazy stuff went down and it wasn't all due to 0-0-0 surprisingly. I cannot wait to see how the synopsis for the next issue plays out! I just can't imagine them getting from where they are now to where they are in that synopsis. Things just look too dire.
