Be More Lando: how to get what you want (and look good doing it) by Christian Blauvelt

This book was actually filled with incredible insights into how to succeed in business!! I was highly impressed. And of course it had, intermingled throughout, references from all across the movies. At the same time, it all felt perfectly Lando--bravado, flair, self-confidence, and all.
The "Be More" book series takes a Star Wars character, identifies what they are the best at, and then formulates a book that they would have written about the topic/issue/skill at which they excel. I've read Be More Yoda and Be More Vader and both of them were phenomenal!! Check out my reviews of these by clicking the book title links. This one was just as good, complete with that Lando swagger. As the intro to the book says, "scoundrel-approved entrepreneurial tips from one of the suavest businessmen in the galaxy. In no time, you, too, will know how to keep cool and do it all." Basically there are sections that go progressively through easy to more difficult steps in the particular skillset and within each section are quotes accompanied with pictures and a little advice paragraph to match a sub-step along the pathway. It's a really great format for breaking down how to be better at something! Paring business acumen with Lando was the perfect match!! And his little icon is so cute (see below)!!

One of my favorite things about this book was how it connected to all three trilogies and even Rogue One...and of course Solo. The connections included:
-"A business landscape is much like a food chain. You're motoring along, making progress, and suddenly a competitor tries to gobble you up like an opee sea killer with a suction cup tongue. This industry rival is likely facing its own predator, too--a corporate sando aqua monster, perhaps." Phantom Menace connection!!! The moral of this vignette is that maybe you can get your competitors to fight it out with each other instead of you!
-"Even time you spent working sanitation can save the galaxy if you learned how to lower a superweapon's shields while mopping its floors." Love this connection to Finn! The advice here is to discover what makes you unique and helps you stand out and play that up!
-"Not everyone has spare credits to spend on advertising: you probably won't be slapping your logo on a fathier jockey's silks at Canto Bight right away." This bit of advice is pushing the reader to use word of mouth to "Let your reputation proceed you."
-"Getting it just right is the difference between walking away with the Millennium Falcon...or with just a meiloorun melon." "Rebels"!!
-"Enough confidence and people will think your midi-chlorian count is higher than it really is. You don't need the closet of a Naboo queen to pull this off, though you really should have a cape for every occasion." I love this one so much! Padme, midi-chlorians, capes, what's not to love?!?

Lando's bravado can be seen in passages such as this (although he proclaims in one bit of advice that bravado is not advised...he's one to talk):
-"What's a detail you've noticed that no one else has? If you're the only reason your entire fleet hasn't slammed into a battle station's invisible deflector shield, that means you are quite essential."
-"If you pulled off a maneuver at the Battle of Taanab, make sure everybody knows it."

My favorite quote from this entire book, which is spot on and such a freaking good interpretation of the moment, is this: "You may have allowed your friend to be frozen in carbonite, but play up how he's now in a state of perfect hibernation. A careful choice of words can turn flaws into strengths, and that, my friend, is how you can fit your talents to any proposal."

My favorite bit of advice from this book is entitled, "Figure out what others can do for you." It reads, "Nobody is a nobody. Whether they're a high school dropout, a street kid hustling for a gangster worm on Corellia, or a person who has survived a few hours in the company of Jar Jar Binks, everyone has a story to tell. So don't judge a smuggler by his scruffiness--make the most of chance encounters to learn something new. Then you can benefit from the unique skills, experience, and insights your new friend has picked up along the way." While I do take offense to the Jar Jar statement, I find this bit of advice incredibly useful!! How important it is to learn from the people around you!! You can learn so much just by being open to gaining knowledge and insights from others!

All in all, an absolutely wonderful collection of tips for succeeding in any sort of business! I highly recommend this book to anyone who would like a bit of advice in this area...or who just wants a good chuckle. Definitely a fun read.
