R2-D2 is Lost! by Caitlin Kennedy

R2-D2 is Lost! written by Caitlin Kennedy, illustrated by Brian Kesinger
So I finally got around to purchasing and reading this one and what a precious book! R2-D2 is Lost! is part of the "Droid Tales" series which also includes C-3PO Does NOT Like Sand! The adventures in these books involve BB-8, R2-D2, and C-3PO...it probably won't be long until a BB-8 book comes out! And I would personally LOVE a D-O book as well!! But I'm assuming as of right now, the "Droid Tales" books take place between TLJ and TROS.
I have to say I preferred C-3PO Does NOT Like Sand! though because it included a lot of interaction between BB-8 and R2-D2 with the two of them acting like little kids and C-3PO acting like the grown up. R2-D2 is Lost! barely features BB-8 (see the one good moment with a lighter thumbs up below) and mostly involves R2-D2 interacting with a little Ewok child who's gotten lost in the woods. By the way, the book takes place on Endor...we even get to see the now defunct and overgrown Imperial Shield Base (see image below).
In this book, R2 has to be the grown up as the little Ewok keeps going off and doing his own thing even though when R2 first found him he was sobbing because he didn't know where he was. I guess now that a friend has arrived, the little Ewok feels free to frolic around and have a grand ole time being off on his own. For a decent portion of the book, the little guy is chasing after some sort of butterfly-like creature...and we all know how that sort of situation usually goes! Let's just say R2, when he finally does find his way back to the Ewok village with the little one in tow, looks very worse for wear.

C-3PO is typical C-3PO in this book as after landing on Endor and meeting up with some Ewoks, he gets dragged into his old throne and begged to tell stories of his new adventures. Of course he says his programming prevents him from impersonating a deity...but we all know how much he revels in the spotlight. Goodness, I love this droid. When R2 contacts him about the lost Ewok, he's typical 3PO, scolding R2 for not getting his scanner fixed before deciding to wander off in the woods by himself...because...well, it's not just the Ewok that's lost...R2 has no idea where he is!
One of the cutest things about this book was the expressions R2 gives just by the shape of his photoreceptor. When it's wide, he's worried or alert. When it's half-closed, he's angry or content, depending on the shape. It's amazing what can be expressed just by different shapes of one circle!! So cool. Notice on the cover of the book how his photoreceptor definitely looks like he's squinting to see in the distance. And notice when 3PO is playing a god (see image above), how his photoreceptor is curved downward in a half circle--annoyed R2!
So a super cute book for any young fan. Doesn't dive into canon connections as much as C-3PO Does NOT Like Sand! though so it's not as exciting a read as that first "Droid Tales" book. But still an adorable romp, especially seeing R2 have to act like a grown up!! We all know he's a child at heart.
