Star Wars comic #37: Imperial Pride by Jason Aaron
"Star Wars #37: Imperial Pride" , written by Jason Aaron, illustrated by Salvador Larroca, Edgar Delgado, and VC's Clayton Cowles
And the main storyline is back! Not a moment too soon. I'm loving it.
Vader is in rare-form in this issue - just pushing himself around like he's the biggest baddie out there...wait...he is. He's all gravitas and condescension when it comes to Sergeant Kreel and his Special Commando Advanced Recon (SCAR) Squadron's latest debacle. This is understandable seeing as the Rebels are quite a ragtag group.
Vader says that Kreel will never be a Sith as the sergeant wields his lightsaber in practice combat. But Kreel has a comeback for him. Although this information may have been relayed before, it escaped my notice if so - Sergeant Kreel was saved from the fighting pits of Chagar IX by the 501st! So he sees himself as forever a loyal stormtrooper. And Sergeant Kreel's loyalty to Vader borders on the absurd. Kreel then meets the Emperor and is awestruck. The Emperor's appearance and words always give me shivers and I was delighted that he came into the scene.
After this familiar scene with Vader, the Emperor, and Kreel we emerge upon a quite laughable scene with an overgrown Overlord and his goat like people. I wanna know who these goat people are! They were adorable and even had those weird goat eyes. Then Kreel shows up and the action begins.
Synopsis: Kreel finds the Rebel base on Horox III and lays waste to its inhabitants. What will be the next move for our favorite main character Rebels?
One of my favorite bits of dialogue was when Kreel is in the midst of fighting the Rebels and has a full-on mancrush moment over Palpatine. In his words, he was in a room "with a bolt of living lightening." The other trooper is just like - let's shoot and win and live. Like I said, Kreel's loyalty and buy-in to the Empire is insane.
"The Sand Will Provide" written by Jason Aaron and Dash Aaron, illustrated by Andrea Sorrentino, Lee Loughridge, and VC's Clayton Cowles
This is a fabulous off-the-rails add-on that goes into the lives of the Tusken Raiders on Tatooine and all that they must go through to endure a life on this harsh planet. I'll admit, the references to sand being safe and protecting and "The sand will provide" were giggling at moments what with my love for Anakin and his hatred for the substance, but nevertheless it worked. Turns out, this was a story from the Journals of Old Ben Kenobi and the old Jedi himself was the narrator....very cool. I loved it.
According to the next issue's synopsis, we're going to make a journey back to Jedha!!!! I can't wait...
