Age of Rebellion: Han Solo: "Running from the Rebellion" written by Greg Pak, illustrated by Chris Sprouse, Karl Story, and Tamra Bonvillain
I loved this issue!!! Greg Pak is killing it with these Age of Rebellion comics!!! We get to see in this issue how Han so quickly and thoroughly got roped into being a part of the Rebellion and it is beautiful!
This story takes place after A New Hope and Smuggler's Run as Han decides it's time to leave the Rebellion now that he's saved the day...twice...
We start on Balnab in the mid-rim--the same Balnab that R2 and 3PO saved from their pit droid overlords in The Clone Wars TV series! The Rebel Alliance seems to be based here at this time. Perhaps it was their base post-Yavin-discovery??
Curious, Han receives 17,000 Imperial Credits just as promised by Kenobi in Chalmun's Cantina but in another bit of canon literary material--the A New Hope junior reader by Ryder Windham, it says he received precious metals for his reward...I'll let it slide.
More canon connections!!! As alluded to above, Han and Chewie's mission to Cyrkon from the middle grade novel Smuggler's Run is mentioned! In this novel, the two scoundrels are sent to rescue Lieutenant Ematt who later becomes a general in the Resistance. I absolutely love that Pak managed to connect this one shot comic with a middle grade novel--this means the story group really is paying attention. Beautiful I say, beautiful!
Luke forces a mission on Han to take some crates to Calumdarian in the Expansion Region. But before Han gets a chance to leave Balnab, he runs into some old work associates in the Balnab spaceport--Akko and the gang from "the Garel scam." These smugglers are in the middle of a job involving transport of spice to some Xexto on Troiken in the outer rim. Han being Han, not able to pass up helping people out (despite his defiantly proclaiming to the contrary), he decides to join the gang for one last hurrah. Things seem to be going well until the Empire appears and, well, you'll have to read to find out. Let's just say it appears for a bit that Han must choose which group of people he will be compassionate toward...and then his compassion outweighs his common sense and he gets knocked in the teeth because of it.
Along the way, we get Gozzos (see below)!!!!! The same species as Flix in the Resistance TV show!! One of my absolute favorite characters! I wonder if they are native to Troiken or had just settled there? Interesting...
So, tons of canon connections that made my heart leap with joy!! I cannot wait to see what Greg Pak has in store for us next with this Age of Rebellion series!!
