Star Wars comic #66: The Scourging of Shu-Torun, Part V by Kieron Gillen

"Star Wars #66: The Scourging of Shu-Torun, Part V" written by Kieron Gillen, illustrated by Angel Unzueta and Guru-eFX
This was a highly enjoyable, quick read. There were tons of beautifully displayed action panels both with laser fire and hand-to-hand combat--we finally get that one-on-one battle between Trios and Leia and it is magnificent. And the plot is moving apace toward what looks to be a scary conclusion!
We open up first on the Cult of the Central Isopter walking up to view The Spike as it is being destroyed. Remember when they showed up at the space port and claimed to be tourists to hide what they knew was going to come to pass? I love how Gillen threaded that plot line through to the end!
After that, everything is a fairly straight forward setting up for the finale with both sides of the conflict trying to figure out what is going on with the orbital bombardment, and Luke running desperately away from the Partisans, trying to prevent them from overloading the final reactor--something that would effectively destroy the entire planet. Leia has no idea that the Partisans have taken over and is confused as all get out over a number of different happenings despite it being her plan all along. Needless to say, events have gone all sorts of awry.
Queen Trios looks super disgusted and snarly throughout the entire issue, her face just ablaze with anger and hatred. Of course, she sees that her planet is about to be ripped in two courtesy of the overloading Spike. Who wouldn't be filled with hate at the people committing such an act? See an example below.
One major plot point occurred that I did not see coming at all. And it was handled really well. You could feel the emotion coming from both parties as knowledge was revealed and hearts were changed. Such a poignant moment!
And although the cover was magical, displaying a battle between Trios and Leia amidst the lava, the actual battle took place in the throne room...it was still pretty fantastic regardless. Check out one of the fight panels below.
     Trivia:
The Tributum is Kanchar's ship.
So not too much to say about this issue, but it was a lot of fun to read and I absolutely LOVED seeing Leia and Trios going at it finally. The artwork was incredible and had me suckered in the entire time. I cannot wait to see what Kieron Gillen has planned for his final issue of this series!!
