Doctor Aphra comic #32: Unspeakable Rebel Superweapon, Part I by Simon Spurrier

"Doctor Aphra #32: Unspeakable Rebel Superweapon, Part I" written by Simon Spurrier, illustrated by Wilton Santos, Caspar Wijngaard, Marc Deering, Don Ho, Chris O'Halloran, and Stephane Paitreau
What a fabulous issue! We see Aphra being Aphra in the now with a new sidekick who unfortunately seems to just want to be loved...something Aphra is not willing to give. We see Aphra in the past as a tween and then teenager interacting with both her father (Korin) and her mother (Lona). And there's plenty of action, intrigue, and fascinating lore to be had!
Notice on the front cover of this issue it proclaims that "Unspeakable Rebel Superweapon" is an "All-New Arc." Seems a bit strange for what is a continuation of the story...and rest assured!--as I confirm below--the story does in fact continue from where it left off last issue and we can all breathe a heavy sigh of relief!!
We start twenty years previous with Aphra at home (see below) with her father on the second moon of Thrinitikk (in the University Quarter) where he has just come into possession of a number of very rare and special artifacts on Jedi heresiologies courtesy of a bribable librarian. The two are looking at a hologram of Jedi Renegade Oo'ob the Apostate who was a Gigoran like Moroff from Rogue One and Ymmoss from Join the Resistance: Escape from Vodron. These heresiologies include the Ordu Aspectu which we found out was in fact very real a number of issues back--remember all that Immortal Rur craziness? Aphra's momma walks in and she's got electro-tattoos! We continue to learn more about Aphra's relationship with her parents as the issue progresses. And it is all so very tragic as you would probably expect.
Then we bump to the present where Aphra is at the Slinani (a religious warrior clan) Migration Shrine in the Outer Rim. She's with Vulaada now!! Remember the girl from the previous arc with the giant beastie?? I didn't realize how much of a child Vulaada was--she's so tiny (see below). And then they confirm it, Aphra did survive her seemingly mortal wound on Milvayne!!! YAY!!! Makes me so happy that she's still around to tell more stories!
Looks like we have a surprise return character!! Very interested to see how this turns out... But Aphra doesn't seem to know who the person is so this could very well spell her doom...again. As the reader, you are left yelling at Aphra to not take the bait!! But you don't see the fruition of this business arrangement in this particular issue so I'm super curious to see if anything bad is going to happen or if Aphra gets off scott free.
We continue to go back and forth from then to now, learning ever more about Aphra's past while experiencing surprise after surprise in the present. I was floored by the surprise that ended the issue and CANNOT WAIT to see how this is going to play out!!
One question I have is how in the world can the Ark Angel be back??? Where was it while Aphra was in Accresker Jail? Did the Empire not impound it?? So confused.
     Trivia:
-Electrogyres are giant eels that bite and seem to swim through the air.
-There's an abandoned spice mine on Unox.
-Extraction Team Misericorde was a branch of the Rebel Alliance Intelligence Service.
-Arbiflux is a planet in the (outer) Outer Rim.
-Chatterplants are a natural alarm system that can be used around livestock.
-Aphra and her mom were nuna (see below) farmers for a time.
So much to love in this issue! I'm definitely curious to learn more about Aphra's past as it has been pronounced this arc will do, but honestly, I'm way more interested in the present timeline...especially with the bombshell that was dropped at the end of the issue!! And what in the world could "unspeakable Rebel superweapon" mean?!? Looks like Aphra's going to be around for awhile, and I could not be happier!
