Free Comic Book Day 2019 - "Tales From Vader's Castle: Droid Hunters" by Cavan Scott
Free Comic Book Day 2019 - "Tales From Vader's Castle: Droid Hunters" written by Cavan Scott, illustrated by Derek Charm
This issue takes place between "Tales From Vader's Castle" #3 "The Briar Witch" and #4 "Night of the Gorax". This at first had me worried that it would be a little difficult in regards to remembering what was happening between those two issues but the story outside the mini-story is very short and concise and nicely fits into the between-space of the plotline from the main "Tales From Vader's Castle" series. Lieutenant Hudd has gone missing and Lina and CR-8R are in the middle of looking for him. CR-8R thinks (rightly of course) that Hudd was distracted by bits and baubles and left the mission for the hunt for something to make him rich. Lina won't believe the worst in her crew mate and so CR-8R begins to tell the following story...
The story within a story is about "The Lost Treasure of Rane Mahal." We meet up with Han and Chewie in The Labyrinth (appears to be a cantina) on Kelada as they are about to smuggle some of Jabba's cargo. But they run into Makkeer (an Azumel--one of the six-eyed sentients from Solo--see below) who is escaping the clutches of a Weequay named Gwarm's gang!! Makkeer says there is a lost treasure of the great pirate queen Rane Mahal just waiting to be found with one of three crystalline droids (see below) containing the map to its location--the other two are booby-trapped! Gwarm is after the treasure and Han gets swept up in the adventure (with Chewie at his side) as they scour the galaxy looking for these droids and the treasure. But what they find is not what they expected!!
One droid is a server on Kelada, another is in the droid museum on Nubia (there actually is a planet named Nubia!! So the Nubian parts of the Naboo Royal Starship mentioned in The Phantom Menace were not just a weird way of saying Nabooin after all!), and the third is on Ogem in the Western Reaches. The treasure itself is on Sakreen in the Outer Rim.
Gwarm's ship, the Hand of Am-Shak is a flying saucer very similar to Hondo's own (see below)!!
Trivia:
-Ziost is a planet.
-The Presager Dagger is a valuable item on Hakotei.
-Spider-silk can be found on Dathomir.
-An NP-droid unit (presumably this is the name of the crystalline droids) was found in the ruins of Mitek-Por.
-Gwellis Bagnoro was a data forger Han knew with a pet Barghest named Izby.
Per usual for a "Tales From Vader's Castle" issue, this one was a lot of fun!! There were twists and turns that I did not see coming and Han was at his best (playing the hero while claiming not to be one). I really enjoyed this ride through the stars and am super excited that a brand new "Tales From Vader's Castle" series is set to come out this October (2019)!! Cavan Scott knows how to bring a good story and I cannot wait to see where he goes next with such a fun and intriguing premise!
To get this comic, if you weren't lucky enough to snag it on Free Comic Book Day at your local comic book store, you may have to resort to Ebay (I couldn't find it available on Amazon). But it's definitely worth the read and if you are a completist you really should get this final addition to the October 2018 "Tales From Vader's Castle" to complete your set!
