Age of Rebellion: Grand Moff Tarkin: "Tooth and Claw" by Greg Pak

Age of Rebellion: Grand Moff Tarkin: "Tooth and Claw" written by Greg Pak, illustrated by Marc Laming, Jordan Boyd, and Neeraj Menon
This one was really good but super creepy and disturbing. No punches were held back as Tarkin enacted his sort of morale boosting on board the Death Star.
Even the very beginning is not to be taken lightly. Tarkin is a small boy on Eriadu where he is going through a trial of some sort in which he must either kill or be killed. He gets attacked by two large cat-like creatures and his uncle and other relatives won't help him out! After being bitten and scratched up multiple times, he snaps a claw off of one of the cats and presumably uses it to be the one who kills.
Rango Tan is home to a pre-hyperdrive species called Rangans amounting to about 45 million on the planet as a whole. There are 3 major civilizations and they have remained neutral in any recent conflicts. Tarkin gives the signal for the Death Star to fire on this poor unassuming planet, but something stops the order!!
Tarkin then proceeds to act like a madman in front of his gunners (one of them had to have not done their job for the "simulation" to need to be aborted). He challenges Chief Gunner Endo Frant to a fight, saying that if Endo survives, he gets promoted to captain. He takes off his shirt and displays his vast amount of scars for all to see! See image below (also notice the lovely pronounced cheekbones and sunken cheeks!). While Endo has a vibro-blade, Tarkin just has a small handmade curved knife. We all know who is most capable of winning regardless of the unfair weapon advantage.
Director Krennic is mentioned!!! As a previous bad enforcer of discipline... The destruction of Jedha and Scarif are also mentioned!!! As simple one-reactor ignitions...
And then we get to the all-out destruction of Alderaan! Notice how uneasy some of the gunners are as they are asked to carry out such a heinous act (see below). Good to know not everyone was on board! But just wait and see what befalls these poor moral people...
Trivia:
There are 168 gunners in the Death Star facility...not all of which are ready to pull the plug on a peaceful planet...to their very serious detriment...
Gravball is mentioned! Something that I think made its debut in the Servants of the Empire series starring Zare Leonis.

What a bang to start this Age of Rebellion series out on!!! This issue was hardcore, hard-hitting, and shows just how far the Empire will go to maintain it's sense of security. Rest assured, I didn't give all of it away above...and also, believe me, it only gets worse! Tarkin has always been one of my absolute favorite Star Wars villains...and man is he truly a villain in this one!
Can't wait to read the Leia issue that also came out today!! Review for that will be coming very soon. Here's to a great start for the series!!
