Star Wars comic #64: The Scourging of Shu-Torun, Part III by Kieron Gillen
"Star Wars #64: The Scourging of Shu-Torun, Part III" written by Kieron Gillen, illustrated by Angel Unzueta and Guru-eFX
A very enjoyable issue with a sprinkling of humor thrown in amongst the serious nature of carrying out Leia's risky plan. Everything seems to be going splendidly until the Partisans decide to press their advantage. Will it all unravel next issue or will we actually get to witness the scourging of Shu-Torun??
The opening crawl says that Leia has already locked down Shu-Torun but we know from the end of last issue that she had just gotten Queen Trios's eye scan and that was it. I'm not sure why they jumped ahead in the crawl because it becomes clear in the story that she's about to lock down the system but has yet to do so.
This issue opens on a wonderfully hysterical moment between Tunga and 3PO! Tunga (still dressed up as the ore baron Lord Or-Tar): "You need to sort of exude privilege and power. Exude, my dear droid. Exude!" 3PO: "I think I'm exuding lubricant from all my joints, sir. We could be discovered at any moment!" I absolutely adore the interplay between these two characters. Tunga is a riot and throw him in with 3PO, who I think is one of the most comedic Star Wars characters of all, and you have a thing of beauty!
Lord Or-Tar used the word "bounder" last issue and again in this issue to describe the Rebels who he of course doesn't know are Rebels. Had to look that one up and it means "a dishonorable man." Interesting, so kind of like scoundrel which it turns out has the definition of "a dishonest or unscrupulous person." I'm guessing he just thought they were brigands of some sort. These comics are teaching me new words all the time!
Tunga then impersonates Queen Trios herself (probably his worst performance that we've seen--he doesn't really try through his words, he just lets his appearance do all the work) as they infiltrate the Imperial Retreat to complete the slicing of the system courtesy of Meorti.
At one point, Trios is speaking with a Lady Comali whose son had been killed...by Vader. Remember that flashback scene when he killed all of Trios's guards? At least it appears that way with Trios saying, "He was a brave and noble guard and died heroically protecting me from...terrorists." And Lady Comali responding, "...Those searing wounds in the corpse...so strange and beastly." That can only refer to lightsaber wounds. I wonder if her people know that Queen Trios is as closely aligned with Vader as she is...
In his enthusiasm, Benthic says in regards to his, the Partisans', and Luke's upcoming attack on the spire, "I want to make it look just like Jedha." *shivers* And then we get the makings of a new plan birthed by the Partisans themselves...of course they aren't content with just ruining the economy of Shu-Torun...they want to take it all! See an awesome image of Benthic below--just absolutely beautiful artistry. You can feel the menace and rage radiating off of him. He almost appears to be a god in this panel and I love it!
So some really great content in this one. I'm definitely intrigued by the plan as I'm watching it unfold. Can't wait to see where it leads us next!!
