Tie Fighter comic #1: The Shadow Falls, Part I by Jody Houser
"Tie Fighter #1: The Shadow Falls, Part I" written by Jody Houser, illustrated by Roge Antonio, Arif Prianto, Michael Dowling, and Lee Loughridge
What a fantastic start to what is sure to be an exciting, action-packed, and dramatic series!! I absolutely love how it's intimately connected with the upcoming trilogy of Alphabet Squadron!! There was even an excerpt from the first book at the end of the issue but I don't do excerpts because I want to enjoy it fully and in the moment so I let that exciting feature be. All I can say is, if the books are written by Alexander Freed, they're going to be winners!
This entry introduces us to the elite TIE Figther Squadron called Shadow Wing (Squadron 5) and hovers around the issue of being careful about what you say for fear of being seen as treasonous. This seems to affect every character. So there's definitely some intrigue moving along concurrently with the story itself. Will everyone who's in Shadow Wing now still be in Shadow Wing by the time we get to Alphabet Squadron?? Will one of them be a spy??? So many possibilities and I am pumped for the ride!
It appears this comic takes place after Empire Strikes Back but before Return of the Jedi from what we're given in the "crawl," as it says, "Soon, peace will be restored to the galaxy and the feared TIE Fighter pilots of Shadow Wing will be the ones to secure victory for the Emperor!" Later in the story we discover that Shadow Wing is a fairly newly formed squadron so this series will presumably tell the beginnings of their adventures.
To begin, we're greeted with members of Shadow Wing decimating a Rebel cell and they're not flying any old TIEs either! These are TIE/IN Interceptors and they look awesome (see image below--I've been wracking my brain about what tattoo to get at Celebration next year and this is definitely it!!). These ships can be found in many bits of ancillary canon material but movie-wise only appeared in action in Return of the Jedi and in hologram in The Last Jedi. They are attached to the Imperial Star Destroyer Pursuer. Shadow Wing is composed of Second Lieutenant Commander Teso Broosh (their leader), Flight Officer Ganem Kahi, Flight Officer Zin Graw, Senior Lieutenant Jeela Brebtin, and Lieutenant Lyttan Dree (Yes!! One of the twins from "Solo: Imperial Cadet"!!!). Zin and Ganem seem to be an item. To obtain new assignments, Shadow Wing reports to Commander Nuress, otherwise known as Grandmother (she's so old that she keeps calling the Rebels Separatists)! If I'm interpreting correctly, Shadow Wing is a part of the larger 204th.
Their new mission is to accompany a maintenance crew aboard the Summit (a ship exactly like the one Han, Luke, and Leia fly away from Mako-Ta on!!) to the Kudo system to help out the Star Destroyer Celerity (means swiftness of movement; presumably captained by Admiral Gratloe) whose hyperdrive is not functioning properly. What awaits them is something they never could have planned for!
So we have the main storyline which ends with the proclamation that it will be continued in TIE Fighter #2, but there's a storyline afterward that starts with "Several days ago." I'm a little confused as to how everything lines up. But both stories were super intriguing and had me hooked.
I'm so excited to see where this series goes! I think it's definitely going to be a good one!
