Galaxy's Edge comic #1: "Baiting the Hook" by Ethan Sacks

Galaxy's Edge #1: "Baiting the Hook" written by Ethan Sacks, illustrated by Will Sliney and Dono Sanchez-Almara with Protobunker
This was a very well-written, super surprising, joy of a read!! And the visuals were absolutely stunning!! I can't say enough about how phenomenal the artwork was, truly bringing you deeply into the story. There was a ton of action but I never felt lost in it, just more drawn in with every panel. And the story kept giving and giving! I am so pleasantly surprised with this first issue of the "Galaxy's Edge" short-run series. I think this is going to be a blast!
From what I can tell at this juncture, each story will follow the same "now" story-line with the below-mentioned Kendoh, Remex, and Wooro, but with a different "then" story-line featuring a variety of known characters. This issue's "then" story featured Han and Chewie and next week's will feature Greedo and Jabba. I am so here for this!
We open on Black Spire Outpost of Batuu of course with the time stamp saying "now". A droid is asking a guy in a hooded cloak (a Clawdite male named Remex) if he might be interested in a Ronto Wrap!! This is one of the food items that has been advertised for the park! Remex asks for a meiloorun juice instead which makes me wonder if that will also be an option at the park. So already they are bringing us directly into the world we are going to be able to experience for ourselves so very soon!
Then a First Order shuttle flies over and the droid is not too happy. On the shuttle we have at least four First Order stormtroopers and a Lieutenant Agnon. One of the stormtroopers mentions "the Red Fury"--I have no idea what is meant by this and it is not explained in this issue...time will only tell...
Remex notices there's a First Order bounty on his head and he quickly changes form...which is what clued me in to his being a Clawdite. He apparently is part of a crew headed up by a human female named Kendoh (their other partner is an Aqualish named Wooro--he doesn't really look like an Aqualish to me though...). They have an audience with Dok-Ondar (man, he is one grizzled, old Ithorian!! super unique and ancient looking--see below). Among the collection in his den of antiquities (a location that will also be readily available to those of us Earth-bound humans very soon) is a baby Sarlacc (also see below--it's kind of cute...)!!
We flash back at this point to "then" with Han and Chewie on the Millennium Falcon at the I'vorcia Prime Preserve in the Outer Rim...on a mission to obtain that same baby Sarlacc. And what an adventure it is!! I'll leave it to you to check out what happens, but will mention that we get to meet Dr. Genzhor, Ooris--his assistant, and a number of Dowutin (Grummgar's species) security personnel.
Some great canon connection quotes include (they are all stated by Han):
- "What in the pits of Lotho Minor is that?" Lotho Minor was where Savage Opress found his brother Darth Maul in a crazed state of mind with spider legs.
- "No job is worth this." A very similar statement to Han's "No reward is worth this." in A New Hope.
- "I promise we'll never take an animal-wrangling job again!" Of course we all know he does take on an animal-wrangling job with Rathtars before The Force Awakens and it goes oh so very badly.
So we get a glimpse into what the Disney parks are going to look/feel like, we get connections to previous canon, and we get fascinating new characters on a very intriguing mission to find a weapon of some import (we aren't told more than this). I cannot wait to see where this series goes from here!! I am so excited about this ride.
