Resistance Season 2: Episode 18 - "The Escape"

Resistance Season 2: Episode 18 - "The Escape" written by Brandon Auman, directed by Steward Lee and Brad Rau
Well, here it is...the final episode of this fantastic show!! I definitely didn't want to see it end, but here is sadly, the conclusion... Before I get into what this episode is about and what all happens, I want to talk about the trajectory of the show as a whole. From the start, this series had quite the breadth of fascinating side characters such as Opeepit (the ever vigilant janitor), Grevel (the always grumpy Aleena), and Aunt Z (the bartender with a deep down heart of gold). It was never just about Kaz and his clumsy, spy mis-adventures, but was always about an entire crew of people with a variety of personalities, living, working, and fighting together for the good of each other. Over time, it became them versus the First Order, adding a whole other layer of obstacles and heartfelt moments, especially after Tam left to join the tyrannical group. The diversity in this show, both in sentient species and the humans themselves is a bastion to look up to and I can only hope the future of Star Wars will be as diverse and inclusive as this show was. I mean, come on, we got our first on-screen gay couple in Flix and Orka (the Acquisitions managers) and it was fantastically glorious. This show has meant a lot to me and I hate that it's at its end...but what did I feel about how it all wrapped up?? Find out below.
     So, on to the episode:
Tam and Rucklin's Star Destroyer--among many others--re-enters the Aeos system to destroy any pockets of Resistance once and for all!! Check out the terrible imagery above of the orbital attack on what was left of the Fish People... After this flagrant display of what the First Order truly stands for, Tam finally decides that this group that took her in when she thought no one else cared for her is no place for someone of her morals and realizes it's time for her to get the heck out of Dodge. She uses a mouse droid (5-L) to gain admittance to Agent Tierny's office and grab her old comlink. With an old mechanics code she used to use to secretly communicate with Neeku so they could make fun of Kaz (haha!!), she calls up Kaz's comlink asking him to meet her on Castilon in three cycles!!
And then damn!! Kylo Ren pops up in a hologram that was supposed to be General Hux and pits Agent Tierny against Commander Pyre using the Force with no effort at all. It was definitely entertaining getting a little more Kylo Ren Supreme Leader action!!
After some convincing from his wife Venisa (about how if it were Torra there wouldn't be a question of what decision to make), Doza allows Kaz and Yeager to make the rendezvous in their stolen First Order shuttle.
Unfortunately, Tam's plan ends up attracting attention from Agent Tierny and the poor pilot must roll with the punches and hold a training exercise with her entire squadron!! Regardless, she takes them to the Tashtor Sector (home of Castilon) to continue with her escape, but Rucklin knows something is up. Soon after Kaz and Yeager land, Tam's squadron of TIEs show up and attack, ignoring Tam's orders to stand down. She even fires on her fellow pilots!! ...but saves Rucklin because the poor girl still has morals and a heart--the reason why she wanted to escape the First Order in the first place.
And then, as the Rebels try to get by the Star Destroyer that entered the system, they get stuck in a tractor beam and the rest of the episode is ploy after ploy to escape the clutches of the First Order!!
I don't want to provide all the information plot point by plot point, but I do want to note a few things:
-Agent Tierny and Commander Pyre set Executioner Troopers (see the image above) on Rucklin and Tam!!! (They think Rucklin's in on her plan.)
-Rucklin finds out the location of the Colossus--in the Barabesh System--and relays this information to Tierny and Pyre...meaning the Star Destroyer is on its way to the Colossus!!
-Kaz gets a signal out to warn his friends, but will they run?? Or will they stay put and fight??

...okay, this is the last episode of the series so I won't just leave you there. They do fight!!! ALL of them!! And it is an absolutely beautiful sight (see the image below).
My favorite quote came from Neeku as the Colossus was readying itself to battle it out against the First Order, "Captain Doza, I must admit my former enthusiasm for adventure is being overtaken by complete and utter terror as well as slight nausea." Doza reassures him that he understands what he's feeling. Poor Neeku--I've always loved him so much and I've especially loved the episodes that let his talents shine. He is a brilliant character with a loving soul, albeit he has a very literal way of mind and sometimes speaks without thinking, but that's a good chunk of what endears me to him.

Probably my favorite part of this episode was their being a boarding party on the Colossus getting attacked by all of our favorite Colossus friends!! This included Opeepit using his floor cleaner and Aunt Z using ALL the guns!! Everyone is getting in on the battle to end all battles!

I also noticed a couple of mirror scenes to events in movies:
-When Kaz is yelling at CB-23 to get the turbolift moving through a comlink, it reminded me of both Luke and C-3PO in A New Hope with the garbage mashers on the detention level and Obi-Wan and R2 in Revenge of the Sith on the Invisible Hand with the turbolifts.
-There's a moment toward the end where Kaz is stuck under a pile of debris after an explosion and Commander Pyre wielding an Executioner's vibro blade is stalking up to him about to strike (see the image below). This was very much like Finn and Phasma in The Last Jedi after the Holdo Maneuver and the Supremacy's being ripped in half, even with the outcome being the bad guy loses out.
And finally, how do I feel about this end?? Well, Commander Pyre and Agent Tierny are presumably dead. The Star Destroyer that has been after the Colossus for the past season is no more. And Tam is back with her found family. But Kylo Ren's appearance in this episode made it feel like he'd do whatever is necessary to find and decimate the platform. Of course, when Tierny asked him for help, he said he didn't tolerate failure (he'd rather her die than send aid). So I'm left a little confused as to what this all means for the Colossus. Are they scott free because Tierny and Pyre failed?? Or will Kylo eventually dispatch another group to bring them to their knees? It's all very nebulous to me and I wish instead this season had stretched out all the way to Lando's call in The Rise of Skywalker and we saw the Colossus joining the big fight at Exegol, knowing they would win in the end. Alas, I'm left with more questions and curious ponderings over the safety of the ship and its people. Not the ending I would've hoped for by any means. Tam's return to the Colossus is of course absolutely huge!! And maybe that was the point, a character's confusion and subsequent betrayal turning into understanding and love for the people she had left behind. I really don't know. But I will say, I wasn't ready for this one to end. I definitely think it had more steam in it and I am so sad to see it go...

I'd LOVE to hear your thoughts on this ending!! Tweet me @AliaMorgaine if you have anything you'd like to add or discuss with me about this episode and the series' ending as a whole. I would love to chat about it!!
